Do any of you make your own horns? I've been carving and scrimshawing for a year now. I'm doing my first dye attempt on a horn though. I'm dying the neck brown, and am wondering what I can use to scrape excess dye of the horn without scratching it. I have a book that says to use a furniture scraper, but am wondering what else I can use that I may have laying around the house.

I do not make my own horns (only got so much time) wish I did.
Would be interested in seeing some of your work though. How about posting a few photos?

Here is one I did this past spring. I'm presently working on two, one is going to be my personal horn.

I haven't done any work on a horn but I have done a little wood scraping at times. I think a piece of broken glass or single edge razor blade would work very well as a scraper on your powder horn.

BTW.. Great looking powder horn!

Nice stuff there jfrench. Like I said I have not done any but have seen others doing it and I know it is a lot of work.
I have a map horn, small priming horn that I recieved as a gift. My big horn has no scrimshaw work on it at all.

You can kind of see them in the photo of me and the Mrs. under "anyone rendezvous" page 2 of this topic. The priming horn is around my neck in the photo. If I think of it I will try to get a couple of close up photos an post them for you to see ::-k

I looked at the photo. Looks like a nice horn. I don't see alot of scrimming on primer horns, especially maps, so that's kind of unique. I'll take a photo of the one I'm working on now for myself. I put a fish mouth on it. I'm getting much better at the carving part. I'll have to post a photo of the miniature horn I made too. It's a gift for an uncle.

That's a really nice horn. What type of wood was used for your rifle stock. That's an incredible piece. Looks like tiger/curly maple?

Someone gave me this horn last night. It's older and a little rough, but I'm going to work with it. The double twist is amazing.
