Grew up not 20 minutes from there. Beautiful country, big animals.

For moose, you need to draw a permit to hunt in region 5, but the odds are not bad at all. as for the Mulies, it can be quite good, especially around the rut (Nov. 10-12th). With the Mountain Pine beetle, they are doing insane amounts of logging in the area, so the deer and moose are just loving it. the best time for moose would probably be in october (I have seen lots in november though), and mid november is always good for the deer, especially if the snow and frost comes early. Good luck either way.

I was at Cougar Creek the same week as spudfarmer. What a waste of money and time. CHeck them out on the Florida BBB, see what others have to say. Save your money. They are sure lacking in knowledge of the hunting.
Here was my experience as follows.

This letter is in reference to the hunt my brother and I were on during 10/29/2007 to 11/04/2007. I have spoken to George May on the issues of this hunt. I was told that this hunt was a spot and stalk hunt and what we got was a ride in a truck for 5 days.
Here are the facts of this hunt:
1) We were not allowed to hunt the Cougar Creek lodge as we were told that there was no moose allocated to hunt there, so we were to hunt on the Gavin area. When we asked the guide if we saw a bull moose on the property if we could hunt it, we were told no because the moose were allocated to the other hunters. We paid to hunt Cougar Creek not Gavin!
2) First day of the hunt we were driven to the Gavin’s property which took an hour and a half of our hunt time so the guide Stacy could have his guide license signed so we could hunt. This should not have been done during our hunt time. When we left the Gavin place the road trip began, Stacy would drive at 30 to 40 km which made it almost impossible to look out the window and see into the timber, when asked to slow down his comment was “We need to cover as much ground as possible if you want to find game”. Another statement Stacy made was he had not hunted or scouted this area in over a year, why are we hunting an area that has not been scouted or hunted by this guide in over a year? My understanding is a guide is used because they know the area and scout the game so to know their movements and bedding areas and this was not done for our hunt.
3) First day we questioned the driving up and down roads and not getting out to try and spot game, we were told that most of the game is found just off the road and that walking the area was a waste of time. I told Stacy that when I went over this hunt with George that I do not like high fence hunts or road hunting, He stated that this hunt was not that and that it was a spot and stalk hunt and that the vehicles are used to get you to the location and then you are in the elements. Stacy’s comment was “George lied to you”. Later that morning Stacy spotted a buck and bracketed it at 25” I shot that buck on his ability to bracket game properly this buck was 17” and a 3 point barely. I was disappointed and let him know this at which time he tried to get my brother to tag the animal.
4) Second day we left and drove for a hour and a half to a location that was supposed to be holding moose, when we got there Stacy stated that the clear cut growth was more than he remembered and that it was unhuntable so he drove off, for the rest of the day we drove around into dead ends and never left the vehicle. When we asked to stop because we thought we may have seen something we were told it was a stump and that he could see game without a problem and would not stop.
5) Third day we left camp drove for an hour or so to were Stacy stated the moose are, Bye this time I am tired of sitting in this vehicle and not hunting and begin to question every thing Stacy is doing, Stacy at this point begins to state how George should not have booked this hunt that there are no moose in the area and that George was booking only combination hunts to raise his commission and that the Mule Deer rut hunts were cancelled. We requested on this day that he get us out to spot and stalk and he (Stacy) refused to do this. On this day we spotted a Bull Moose in the trees moving off towards the thick timber and requested to stalk the animal and Stacy refused to get out and do this his comment was “It is gone and you will never see it again” My brother said can we try to put a stalk on it and Stacy said “No it is gone and you cannot stalk these animals”. This same day Stacy told us that all the game both moose and deer are a migration herd and that if we were to see shootable game we would have to get it now or it would never be seen again. I have hunted all my life and know about Mule deer and I will tell you that they can be patterned and stalked if you know what you are doing.
6) Day four we leave camp again at around 7:00 AM I am disgusted with the fact that I have spent $8000.00 + on a taxi ride around the woods and have been told I don’t know how to spot game, and that my request to stop the truck to see if a figure may be game is a bother that he should not have to put up with. On this day we saw no game not even a doe. We spent 12 hours in a truck and did not see one game animal, in my opinion this would be due to location and the speed we were traveling at. I have video to prove the speed we were traveling at through the woods. I told Stacy I cannot continue to sit in this truck and drive around doing nothing and that this is not hunting and that Ron is going to hear my disappointment.
7) Day five I stay at the lodge as I cannot spend one more day in a truck. I am a back country hunter and hunt to get out in the outdoors and experience the opportunity to take game, I could care less if I get an animal it is about the experience and this was anything but a good experience. I met with Ron told him of my opinion of this trip and that I would be calling George and the Florida Office.
As you can see this hunt was not a hunt but a couple of hunters caged in a truck for five days.

As a footnote we are not the only parties that had problems, one party was belittled and treated as incompetent, the guide went as far as to take the bolt from one hunter and would demand them to follow orders like they were children. Also the guide should not be telling us the client of the problems they are having with the broker, we are there to get away and enjoy the hunt not to be harped on about how they are being screwed by the broker. A couple of examples of this is Stacy talking about how George is not booking the rut hunts due to it effecting his commission, and how George should not have booked our hunt as there is no game at this time.

That sums it up pretty good it is really to bad people like us who love to hunt have to get screwed like this I only get to hunt once a year thats the worst part

I Know this area of British Columbia very well - have had a cabin in the cariboo region for 15 years and my Mom lives up in 108 Mile ranch not far from lac le hache

lots of very good hunting and fishing in this area

I agree with you. I lived in the 100 Mile area previously and am very familiar with it. My family all live in the area. There is some fantastic hunting and fishing to be had, although it isn't anything like it use to be due to the horrendous increase in the population and the tremendous amount of access that has been created in the last couple of decades.

Sadly, you and I knowing where good hunting and fishing is to be had, has little to do with the quality of hunt these guys may have had with a specific outfitter. There are some very good outfitters in the Cariboo-Chilcotin and unfortunately there are also a couple that should not be in business...........which is true of just about anything, anywhere.

This is really not good...I am a Outfitter with a Area out of Prince George...This makes all BC Outfitters look bad.However the fact is their is really good hunting all over the Chilcotin. There is also many good Outfitters in Region 5.

Here is my advice..This outfitter has many reports on the Hunting Report..This is always a good place to start....the good , the bad, the ugly ! to say the least.

Also this Outfitter is not a member of the Guide Outfitter Assocaition Of B.C.

All of these Outfitters are bound by a strict code of ethics and standards...you would also have other options if you were mistreated...

Anyway..BC is a beautifull place with lots of Game and some real hard working Outfitters who give it there all to make your dreams come true...and a few who don't give a crap..
