Hi, all -
I'd like to discuss something here that some people may find a little sensitive...if so, I apologize in advance.
An associate of mine has a home on an Alpine lake in NorCal. The entire community has been beset by Canadian Honkers who seem to live there year round now. Their droppings and damage to lawns are considerable, and people are starting to consider options for removing them with extreme prejudice.
The removal will take place in relatively confined quarters (people won't have hundreds of yards of backdrop for their targets). I was wondering what sort of air guns (and loads) if any might be appropriate for this purpose. Most of the shots can be taken from less than 30 feet away. Any specific ideas on an appropriate firearm for a humane kill? Thanks... |

Cool that you got in on this Zim........ Don't know why it would be a sensative subject, alot of places are getting overrun by them.
Send a few down my way, would ya.... :yes: We have some decent duck hunting near the coast, but the honkers stay inland in the valley...... Haven't gotten a goose since highschool in Vermont(1989).......

| I live on a lake and I agree, those geese can make a big unwanted mess. Luckily they are only here for the winter! |

| They make a huge mess here too they are even causing lakes to be closed because of ecoli outbreaks its ridiculous they wont let us shoot them up here they have also taken over the beach in my town they are there all year till they fly south then there back in the spring.Very smart too they know exactally where to land and not get shot right in the middle of town or too close to town. |

Up here (N Idaho) they have had some special hunts (some in city limits). Geese are pretty smart and especially when it comes to avoid getting killed, and killing some has greatly helped. Yes, there is some damage control when a wounded goose finally expires and crashes on Main Street ... but this is Idaho. I have been pushing for archery hunts in real close quarters - but have not made any headway on that particular subject. Maybe a goose can fly off with an arrow in it ... dunno.
As to your question - 30 feet is 10 yards which is close. If they are on the ground - use # 6 or # 7-1/2 and go for the heads??????? Sounds like it could be a mess. But I don't think any gun less than a shotgun should be used - or you might have various wounded and dead geese ending up about anywhere. Just my thoughts.
Just be sure to jog up wearing your jogging outfit when you kill some, or maybe walk up with all your gear in a baby stroller. Then they will be forever afraid of joggers and baby strollers. (I'm not joking.) |

| Well, Okay, `forever' is a strong word. But they will be afraid of joggers and baby strollers for a while. |
