I've taken one bull moose - that with a 180 gr. Partition out of my 300 Win Mag. Down with one shot to the shoulder hump.

Well congrats on your moose, but you were very fortunate that you got the animal. The "hump" is just muscle & grissle, no vital organs at all. My guess would be spinal damage.
Congrats again :D

Well that's news to me! That's where the guide said to hit him, and he was the senior guy in camp. I wonder what the logic was behind that recommendation? ::-k Normally, one would aim a foot or two lower on that kind of critter, and I suppose that's what I'll do next time!

For the life of me I can't understand why someone would tell you that , unless they actually believe it themselves. And that story is not new by any means, heard it forty odds years ago.
For the still doubtful, just Google " Shot Placement moose". I always wanted to see Alaska and go on a Grizzly Bear Hunt,,those fellas got humps too, but I wouldn't be aiming at it :[-X :[-X :[-X

Well I used my regular MOOSE getter in Newfoundland in september, my .340 weatherby shooting a 250 grain Nosler partition, successful and a good hunt. Had to wait till tuesday before seeing any moose. We were going out from the lodge on this dirt road at about 7:15 in the morning when all of a sudden this cow and bull jumped right out of the gutter beside the road. Had to apply brakes to stop from hitting bull. He run up the road and off to the side on a small bank. Jumped out of truck and put a 250 in front of the rear right leg up thru the boiler roon., as he was quartering away. Course everyone knows it takes a moose 1 minute and 57 seconds to know that he is dead, He just stood there so I layed another of the .340 in the same place. He toppled over backward, upside down about 10 feet from the dirt road. Easy loading after field dressing. The next day-wednesday- it rained in buckets, so that meant some crusing, just lookin. Thursday afternoon around I ended my hunt with a nice Cariboi at 6pm in the afternoon. We took the ferry to Nova-Scotia on saturdsy nite thru gale force winds, what a ride, took us 8 hrs. instead of 6. :thumbsup1:

We have used a rem mdl 788 in the .308 cal with 180 grain federals for 7 of the 9 moose shot in our family. This year twith my wifes 23 point bull she used the .308 and I used the 7mm. mag as a back-up gun. Not 1 of these moose have run over 50 yards. It's not the size that matters, it's the shot placement.

Having been involved in the demise of 100+ moose you'd think I'd have some serious observations on the subject. but it's shot placement plain and simple. My wife uses a 300 Savage with 165 Hornady spire points at 2500 fps and has killed 12 bulls with 16 shots. On the other hand while guiding I've seen nearly that many 375s used to take 1 moose.
My personal favorite is the 358 Norma Mag with 280Swifts or 300 Barnes originals. If a new moose rifle was on the menu it would be a LIGHT 35 Whelan Imp on a mod 70 action.

I'd like to take one with my .375 Ruger, or my .450 Marlin.

If I draw a tag this year I am taking my .375 H&H probably with the Speer 270 gr BTSP loaded over a healthy does of IMR 4064. I have confidence in my gun. I tried using the .270 this year for antelope but couldn't hit a thing. So I put it back in the safe and took out the .375. First shot and I was getting my hands bloody. Got a nice doe.

There are several degrees of wounded but only one degree of dead.  Realisticly it doesn't destroy as much meat as my .300 did.

I like the .243 also. It is probably my second favorite round.

I have shot plenty of moose with my 30-06 Sako and my 300 Weatherby Mag. My preference is the 300. I took this Boone & Crockett bull last fall in northern British Columbia with 1 shot.
