Hi everybody. I took this picture of one of the 30 or so pronghorn on our ranch last night. The ranch is in Midland County, Texas. We don't have a season or any permits in Midland County for pronghorn, so they are pretty much just pets. They have been on the ranch for years, long before we bought it a few years ago. I have heard that they cannot jump a fence like deer, so I guess that is why they stay out here.
Anyways, here he is. He is one of three good-sized bucks I have seen, and the largest. Mostly keeps to himself, but I see him every time I am out there. I was building fence last summer, looked up and saw him looking at me 75 or so yards off. I have walked to within about 15 yards of him before. I think he is a pretty nice buck, but I have never been on an antelope hunt before or seen that many, so I don't really have any way to judge. What do you think?

Do you have any idea about what he would score, or know how I could estimate it?
We have a smaller buck out there that is really interesting. His horns curve sharply down over his face, running slightly outward of his eyes, and then curving inward a bit. They seem to be fairly symmetrical too. It looks kind of like some sort of hockey face protector. I will try to get pics of him next time I am out there, but he is a bit more skittish and less curious than the big one. |

I have no clue on Texas hunting requirements or permits for antelope, but I do know that there are many places in Texas that offer antelope hunts. I would contact the Texas DOW and inquiry if your family (landowners) have a right to hunt them. Since they are located on your ranch, and your ranch is providing the habitat for their existence, it would seem to me you have some jurisdiction on them?
As for the antelope theory of not jumping fences. They can and will jump fences, however, it seems their preferred method is to go under them. In states that hold large densities of antelope herds, it is recommended that the bottom wire on fences be a minimum of 18" high and strung with smooth wire.
