I just found out that in MN I can hunt these species year round. I have a 22 lr, but like the idea of practicing at farther distance with a scope. I bought a box of 110 gr Hornady v-max bullets for this purpose. Yes I've looked at the manual, but I'm looking for any loads anyone has tryed and I'ld like to know if anyone has used their 30 calibers for varmit hunting.
Also, is coyote an alright meat to cook and eat, or is it a bad idea because of possible diseses?

Well ,are you serious? eating coyote meat ?

On the remote possibility that you are, may I suggest something other than a 300 Win Mag, you'll ruin too much good meat

I thought I might be a little under gunned with the win mag

hey, I've never hunted them, so I have no idea if they are edable or not. I could always use FMJ in the win mag.

The point is, I'm not going to buy another rifle for varmit, when I can use the rifle I have. it's either the 300 win or a 45-70 with 400 gr bullets.

I wanted opinions on the 110 gr v-max bullets and if anyone has used a 30 caliber for varmit hunting.

now I know coyote isn't really an eating meat.

What is the twist in your barrel? A 300 win mag will be smoking those 110's so if it has a relatively fast twist you'll be sending it in pieces of red molten copper and lead. Also the 110's in .308 caliber are really short and are not very good long distance rounds. I used them in my 30-06 and they were no good past 150 yards. I think they started to tumble. The rockchucks I did hit were destroyed though. You may want to try 130's or 150's. Or you really might want to look into a cheap .223 or something. You can get a Stevens for around 300 and they shoot well. If you varmit hunt very much it will pay for itself becuse you won't have to shoot a keg of powder every trip out.

I have a 1:10 twist. The veviews I read for this specific A-Max bullet were good. some have used it in the 300 win and 30-06 with good results. After I use these, I'll stick to my normal hunting bullets, so I can get practice for big game

Shoot 'em and leave 'em... You'll be doing the wildlife a favor.
Around here they practically beg you to kill them they do so much harm to Antelope fawns, as well as deer. At a seminar I was at it was estimated that they kill up to 75% of all Antelope fawns, and they encouraged us to shoot them.
Because of mankind, their numbers have increased beyond the normal distribution and carrying capacity. Cattle watering holes, more food sources, golf courses, dumpsters, etc. have let them multiply and move into areas they didn't inhabit before, while continual development shrinks natural habitat for the game.
Sounds cold, but I have no soft-spot for them, and you can only collect so many pelts.....

I prefer the 458 Winchester Magnum for anything above bunny sized game. You know to be sure and all. ::neener:

well, you know.
I think the 300 will work for ground hogs, but you are probably right. I better use my 45-70 with 400 gr projectiles for rabit
Eventually, my 45-70 is getting converted to the 50 alaskan so i can use it on coyote and maybe even a deer. :thumbsup1:

Are you guys serious or is this post a wise crank. First off if you will eat a dog you will a coyote. They are similiar. If you have a dog go look at him and see if you would like to eat him. Secondly if its practice you want for the 300win mag go to the range. Practicing with 110gr bullets out of a 300win mag will defintiely not be the same as hunting with 150gr or more. The recoil from the 110gr would be like shooting a 100gr in.243. Practice with what your going to use in the field.

You mentioned you didnt want to be UNDERGUNNED. Well, you posted on the small game forum so how could you possibly feel undergunned when the 300win mag is the second most popular big game hunting rifle in AFRICA.
Come on guys get real[/quote]

1. When I look in a dogs eyes, it doesn't feel any differently than looking in any other animals eyes.
2. In my rifle, the 110 gr bullets at 3400 fps really doesn't feel any different in recoil than the 180 gr bullets at 3000 fps.
3. I would hunt varmit anyways, but was thinking why not use my 300 win mag to practice with that specific rifle instead of paying for a new rifle in a smaller caliber and having to get use to another rifle when I could use this one for everything around this area.
4. All the other stuff about being undergunned was purely joking around.

5. Why do people get upset if someone uses something other than what every one else uses to hunt a certain animal. Is a 300 win mag cruel for varmit or something? I would thing a .308 110 gr varmit bullet wouldn't explode an animal any more than a .223 55 gr varmit bullet would.
