Oxnard, Calif. officials buy aerosol horns to scare off coyotes
The Associated Press
OXNARD, Calif. — City officials have purchased 1,000 hand-held boat horns to help residents scare off coyotes. Code compliance manager Dirk Voss said this week he bought the horns early last month after residents complained that coyotes were killing their pets.
"The taxpayers don't want us to say, 'It's not our job,'" Voss said this week. "They want us to come up with something."
The city spent $5,942 for the aerosol-powered devices that emit shrieks that can be heard up to a half-mile away over land, officials said.
The horns may also come in handy for scaring off stray cats and dogs, Voss said.
But some, like retired city code enforcement officer Joe Avelar, said the idea could cause more problems than it solves.
"You're going to have disturbing-the-peace problems everywhere," said Avelar, who now chairs the city's Inter-Neighborhood Council Forum. |

I would rather hear a single gunshot every so often than a "noise emitting device" every hour when someone wants to scare off a yote. Those horns won't work anyway. We had to carry them for a while on our worksites to deter bears/cougars...Only one guy ever got to use it. he saw a cougar 200+ yards away and wanted to give it a try. when he blew the airhorn the cat charged! ::-k Luckily he was close to the boat and the cat came to its senses when it got close.
Those noise makers are going to be a real annoyance, not much of a solution. It's better than the capture and neuter idea that some greenies through out there! |

CVC this is about the craziest thing I've heard of. Figures California would come up with this type of solution. Sounds like something Boulder would do here in Colorado!!
I can only imagine how annoying those horns will become! :o Coyote are smart, they'll be used to them very quickly. |

| Sounds like a pretty pointless idea to me, trying to use loud horns to scare city coyotes away, if these coyotes are in the city limits they are already accustomed to hearing load air horns from trains and semi-trucks, and if not will now be used to having people blow air horns at them, once they see there is nothing harmfull happening other than a sudden loud noise, it wont take them long to go back to their old routines. |

I know of a place where the fishermen have a fishtrap during the summer and they have a device that sounds like a shot being fired to ward off the comerants .That don't work either . The trap is always lined up with comerants
I spoke with a sheep farmer one time who had a donkey to ward off coyotes .He told me that won't work either . The coyotes will get used to that sound to . I know of sheep farmers that have a large breed of dog . Not sure of the breed but it's a large dog . I also know of another sheep farmer that has a lama or 2 . I haven't heard the results on how they work to ward off the coyotes . I know both farmers and the first time I talk to them I'll ask Thanks to PETA !!!! is why the pets are being killed by coyotes .It's only going to get worse . Save the coyotes , the hell with your pets . The coyote will eat anything with food ualue ::-k ::-k ::-k |

Llamas work pretty well for keeping the coyotes out. I also know a guy that has a really big dog that lives with his cattle during calving. I've watched that dog take after the yotes. They can be kept away from a herd/flock, but who wants to keep a llama around?
They'll come right into yards and nail pets if they get the chance. It's not a pretty sight when a coyote kills.
Anyone live in an area with "wild dogs"? They suck too. |

| No sir , that is no joke , it's reality . Farmers have to protect their livelyhood . These critters consider the flock of sheep as their own and will protect it . 1 Lama alone works best . The dogs also work good to protect livestock . |

This is why I love Californians, great entertainment value. Why don't they try handing out condoms to the coyotes. Sounds about as bright
As far as llamas are concerned, they're ugly enough, the coyotes can have the sheep, I'm not getting one.
