Pet supply retail giant PETCO is working in partnership with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest anti-hunting group, to bring the animal rights message to school children across the country. The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance demands that this relationship be terminated.
The PETCO Foundation, the charitable arm of PETCO Animal Supplies, Inc., is sponsoring the HSUS’s National Association for Humane and Environmental Education (NAHEE) Adopt a Teacher program in 500 elementary schools across the country. The program is part of HSUS’s plan to introduce children, grades kindergarten through six, to the animal rights movement.

The "animal companies" (pet supplies, food, vets, etc) sometimes get tied in with HSUS because of the "adopt an impounded cat/dog" campaigns. For instance here is some fund raising that Iam and petco foundation did with a local HSUS chapter:

http://www.petco.com/pressrel/.....sp?webt=0&

The focus was on reducing the amount of feral cats/dogs killed every year, which has nothing to do with hunting.

That being said, HSUS is against hunting w/o a doubt. It would be interesting to see what the content that is in these kits that are being given to teachers. Clearly if it has an anti-hunting angle, it should not be allowed in the classroom because of its political slant.

For some people any connection with HSUS is the mark of satan. Personally, I can understand limited working with HSUS on the grounds of improving animal shelter and reducing feral animal counts via sterilization. Although even limited transactions with HSUS do make me suspicious.

I wrote a letter to someone (I forgot exactly who) at petco that I was so mad that they were anti hunting and support anti hunting HS the dude sent me back a letter that they weren't anti hunting but the program they supported was a newsletter to schools and school kids called NICE to make them more aware about animal abuse and basically to get them enviormentally aware the dude sent me a free copy of one of them and I didn't find any anti hunting stuff but ALOT of "save the earth enviro junk"... Now my Q is were they just trying to placate me cuz I was threatenting to tell everyone I know they were anti hunting or are they really ok with hunting...

That is interesting that you wrote Petco and they respond. Personally I don't think Petco is against hunting even if they do work with HSUS on some animal welfare issues (abundance of stray pets).

Some hunters would disagree with me though, some believe that any association with HSUS is too much association, period. Frankly with HSUS stated mission I can't blame a hunter that would withdraw business from Petco over it.
