I'm planning on buying a new tent for elk camp this season. We backpack in and have always had a very light (tiny and cold) camp. This year i'll be taking our horses and can afford a little more weight.
I want a tent big enough that three of us can sit around and play cards. Probably an 8 man. I like the Cabelas out back lodge or the Alaskan giude dome tent.
I also want a heater. I would like one with a safety on it so i don't have to worry about carbon monoxide. I'm not crazy about the wood stove idea.
Anyone have any suggestions or stories i should consider before i buy?

I really can't help you with your choice of heater as I use only the catalytic types but make sure your tent comes with a decent fly. This will deter condensation as well as retain what heat you generate inside.

If you really want to be safe, I think your only option is wood. Its what we have used for years now. Yea it can be a pain, cutting the wood. But better to be a pain and wake up in the morning than not.

Great West is right........and when you come in cold and soaked nothing will warm you up and dry things out like wood heat. There are wood heaters that fold down and are easy to pack on horses. I have used them for years.

Wood heat is the only way to go.

I agree also, but if you cant use wood ,propane is good too and you can buy some new safer heaters these days.
