open sight 45/70 Govt with 420 gr Garrett +P loads, 80 yards broke rib going in and coming out, tipped him over and when he he fell one horn caught in a crack in the rocks and broke off about five inches from the skull, best we can figure ity was somewhere between a 48" to 52" spread.
Next moose or elk I shoot with this load will be a high shoulder shot because the cast hardened bullet performs better when penetrating bone than it does when traveling through muscle and hair.
maybe I will be able tell how it performs on bear shortly as our spring season came in yesterday |

no but the 5x6 elk that I shot the next day was about 180 yds and the bullet performed the same, except he didnt tip over but when he turned away after the hit I shot him again between the shoulder blades and broke his back.
two days two bulls, 1moose 1elk = full freezer, lotsa roasts, breakfast sausage and burger
No fear on anything that walks around here at 200yds or closer. |

| I've shot most of my moose with a 30-06, but right now I'm carrying a .35 Whelen - just haven't shot anything with it yet. In recent years I've lent a 30-06 to my brother-in-law who has managed to drop a couple of bulls with it. Maybe I should go back to my "lucky" cartridge. |

| In my first 4 moose hunts I used a .300 weatherby--on my hunt in 2005 I used a .340 weatherby for a change. Resulting in kills on all moose--Hunted in Newfoundland on all hunts. |
