Lot's of people ask about hunting dogs that are not sure what they want but often it ends up they mostly want a hunting buddy. Well I found a guy on another site that raises and use's "Drent". I PM'd him and got back a good reply from him. Thought I'd share it with you in case your looking for a hunting buddy and not really into what we've done with most dogs.

Hi Don,

The Drent, in general, hunts "under the gun". My male is an exception, and tends to run about 150 yards on CRP, but my female has less than half his range. 40 to 75 yards is typical for the breed.

The Drent is very closely related to the Small Muensterlander, and somewhat to the Larger Muensterlander, and the German Longhair pointer. I would not call their personality "spaniel" like. They tend to be fairly calm, affectionate, but they are somewhat reserved towards strangers (the watch dog influence). Soft natured, and hard headed (not the easiest combination for training!).

Because of their "do-all" dog background, there's quite a bit of tracking in most of them, so they do very well on pheasant, even in thick cover. Two years ago, I went an entire season without losing a single wounded bird! Especially the females tend to be very, very tenacious.

I'm not currently breeding, as I am looking for a female with a little better structure and a little more point than my Anna. All in all, there's no "magic" in the Drent, but a good Drent is as good a dog as any other good dog.

Definitely not a horseback trial dog, however! If I'd have to pick a moniker, I'd call them a good meat dog!

Enjoy your pups,

John Lambregts
"Dutch".

I think the man gave what apears to me an honest asessment of his dogs without glowing do it all sales. This might be a place to look. If anyone wants to know how to contact him, let me know.

Just got off the phone with the owner, name is John. Very nice gentleman and no puffery. Punch in "Drents Partridge Dog" and what will come up is Dutch Boy Kennels.
