30-06.
The ammo is readily available everywhere.
It's good for anything in North America provided you get close enough and place your bullet correctly. |

| For my area and hunting style, a .308 winchester is plenty, not to mention accurate and lightweight. So if I could only use one of my rifles, that one would be it. That said, I carry my .300 Wby if I believe there's a chance that I'll have to shoot 200+ yards at something like elk. :thumbsup1: |

| Finally decided on my final answer; My 9.3X74r SXS chapuis with the leupold vxIII 1.5X5 20 mm scope on top of a removable claw mount. Big enough for anything, and not too fast or big for deer or any other types of small game. It also shoots just flat enough for plains game (similar to the 375 H&H). :thumbsup1: |

Don- YES, if I ever have any desire to shoot antelope. I don't really know whether your referring to African antelope or to pronghorn. Obviously, it wouldn't be ideal for pronghorn b/c it's a double and they don't shoot that straight after 200 yards. It's also not a "magnum flat" cal either. If your talking about African antelope, I would absolutely use it ont hem. It'll cause less meat damage than most of these guys' 270 mags.
To be honest though, I'm not real sure yet how it's going to work out. I'm working with loads etc to try and stretch that sucker out a little. I'm good within 175 yards witht the 286 grained bullets (what it was regulated with), but am trying to see if the regulation will hold firing lighter bullets. It's been a mess dealing with the regulation from just adding a scope, but things are looking up.

I would say a 308 because it has just about the same balistics as the 30-06 but it is more versitile with bullets and scope adjustments.
A lot of military wright ups on 308.

| I go with the 30-06 because there is more choice of bullet weight and you can find 30-06 in any shops around the world. For competition shooting at the range, I will use the 308 |

This seems to be a very old thread, but is still going so I guess someone is reading it! :D
Seems the bulk of the posters were posting the old 1906, 30 Gov(30-06) and I guess that is a real good answer for general hunter who rarely hunts in areas where the big coastal Brown bear, or even lower 48 grizz, hang out.
The 30-06 is a versatile cartridge because of the bullet selection, and the wide availability of over the counter ammo, almost anywhere ammo is sold.
In my case, I hunt mostly in Alaska, and Canada in North America, and In Africa, so I need something a little bigger,to be legal. Just like the old 30-06 my choice is very versatile as well, anywhere in the WORLD! the old 375 H&H, or 9.3X62 or 9.3X74R medium bore cartridges, and are medium chamberings for the world. So, those would be my choice for the hunting I do.
If I hunted mostly in the lower 48, the 06 would be as good as any! Because of the way, and the places I hunt in North America is simply not the best choice. Now I could live with the 338 Win Mag, or the 340 Wby Mag, in a good CRF bolt rifle, even in the areas where I hunt in N A, but the 375H&H, and the two 9.3s are still a better choice.
For the guy who hunts from whitetail, up to, and including Moose, and Black bear a 300 win mag would be a real ticket, and would give you a little more power for long range shooting at Sheep, but the 30-06 would do! :thumbsup1: |

The 338-06 is an amazing cartridge. It kills all out of proportion to it's ballistics. .338 bullets are available in good weights and penetrate extremely well.
I hunt mostly with a .375 H&H. I can download it for non-dangerous game or use full power loads for bears, elk, moose, etc. It's great at short or long distance and will take Africa's Big 5.
I have a custom .375 H&H barrel for my Thompson Center Encore. The Encore rifle weighs 9 lbs and has a muzzle brake. It shoots like an 30-06. |
