Hey folks! I'm new to this forum stuff...much more comfortable talking around the campfire but here goes.
I have called yotes in Colorado for the last 20 years with some success but have only called in 2 lions in that time. I have used rabbit squealers, fawn and howlers. One time I was calling in a snowy canyon, snowshoed in and set up. Called for about 45 mins started for my next set and there were lion tracks in my snowshoe track 30 feet away from my set. Didn't even know he was there. Left the country in search of less sneaky critters. ::shock: .
Now that I'm older and less wise I want to get after lions and was wondering if anybody out there had much experience calling them. I've gone through some of the discussions and haven't found much on the subject. Let me know any ideas! Thanks! |

Where is Austin CO?
I tried to get a lion last year by tracking and then calling. It sounds like you have a lot more skill at calling than me. I did get on some very fresh tracks one time last year and sat and called for over an hour with no luck. I'm going to try again this season. I do have a guy that has one coming into his back yard about once a month. I'm going to try and get one that way also.
I did attend a preaditor hunting class at the new Bass Pro Shops in Denver and the guy teaching the class said he called one in south west of Denver.
Welcome to the forum and Good Luck |

Austin, Co is just east of Delta.
I've heard of the DOW using calling techniques for problem lions but for the most part they are tight lipped about these things and problem lions normally aren't quite as cautious about humans as others. I've had two last spring on the backside of my property but I didn't have the time to play with them...and it was after the season closed.
Thanks for the welcome! |

Welcome to BGH. I'm about the worst caller I know but can't imagine why a lion might not come into a deer distress call or an elk distress call. Don't know if one would waste it's time on a rabbit. Might try a sheep in distress also. Think I'd do this with a buddy tho, if a lion does come in, it's looking for a meal!
Now, I was out calling yesterday evening until almost dark. Went back by there this morning and a coyote ran across the road in front of me. Can you imagine how far away I managed to call that coyote that it took all night to get they? I think I'm getting the nack of this! :](*,) |

| I have spoken to a man that claims to have called in like 26 lions. He said he uses only lion sounds to call lions. Like lionness in heat. Distressed cub. I don't remember the exact sounds but the fact that he used only lion sounds is what stands out in my mind. I know how you can get in contact with him if you're interested. |

That would be great if you could pass on his name so I could chat about lion sounds. CDOW doesn't allow "mech Calls" for lion so I'd need to learn the sounds and copy them myself. Won't my wife be overjoyed when I'm practicing roaring like a lion all night! :D
Don
I think a yote can lope about 10MPH, so if you were calling the night before he musta come from 80 miles away or so. Youv'e got alot better lungs then me :=D> .
Thanks for the welcome! I'm looking forward to exchanging some ideas on yotes too. |

| Several cats have been brought in with cow calls... i rough guessed one pushing 200 last year, I think much calling success is to luck out in a area where a couple dominat males are bordering territory or in a area a female is teaching young cats to hunt. |

Yes, you are correct. Thats why I havent loged on there in over a year but those guys do know what they are talking about. They are some of the best in the buisiness of predator hunting. |

Yep they seem to know a lot more than I do on most issues. (Not a huge suprise cause I'm not the sharpest stick in the pile). I'll see if I can skirt the outside and just pick up the leavings.
Romey,
I'm hoping to hunt the cats basically out of my backdoor. I live in the mesa country in western Co and have heard quite a few cats in the spring. Thanks for the advice |

| One thing most people dont realize is , just becuase you cant see a cat doesnt mean there isnt one there or that he/she doesnt know your there. I have tracked some for hunters that were shocked one was in the area, one cat was actually following another set of hunters and was several places he put a stalk on them could be seen in the snow, often while a Lion is in a stalk mode or i should say a ambush mode they will "belly" down and there tail will twitch in the snow when they belly down deciding supper. Obviously hooking up with a houndsman is going to give the best success but like i say i have called several quite by accident with cow distress call. |

Romey,
Thanks for the info. Which cow distress call are you imitating? I've spent quite a bit of time in the field and have heard fawns but never cows. Is it similar to a cow chrip? Thanks! |

Can you get me a link to the other site you were talking about to AustinCo?
It's that time of year again and any info I can get would be great.
Thanks, |
