Well it was trying to snow and rain this morning. We went out anyway, got really wet right off, but it was worth it as we flushed about 4 cocks and 4 or 6 hens at the first place we went. Didn't bag any as we made a bit of an error when working the area. The birds flew out right when we were in a bit of trees and then flew out around so shooting was difficult to say the least. Just being out finding some birds and spending a day with 17 yr old son was more then worth it. I remember being taken out pheasant hunting by my brothers 70 yr old neighbor about 25 yrs ago, so I think my son will remember these times even more. It is amazing how fast those pheasants can take flight and make distance. We have to be carefull as to not shoot the hens. They are not ever in season. Anyone have a dog they want to lend us. :) This is one of the greatest spots to hunt, but its big and there is so many places for them to hide.

what type of dog is that? Looks like about the size dog I would like. I have always loved labs and border collies. I have a border collie but she only like to try to herd me. She is a awesome pet. A lab is bigger then I would like. But it is also the time committment to traing a dog. First I would have to learn how to do it, then try to do it. I once trained a st barnard to fetch ducks. Kinda long story, and very quick training. Took about 3 minutes of throughing rocks at a duck I shot in a dug out. After she brought it in she was hooked. Bad thing she was also a bit nuts and I had to put her down because she wanted to eat certain ppl. And a one of them was my sisters daughter (who happened to own the dog). The dog was very unpredictable, and that is maybe why the first owners gave it my sister to have on the farm.

Yes, I agree totally - the rate at which they put distance between you and them is amazing. You really can't afford to let your `readiness' down even for a minute - `cause they seem to know when you do - and blast into flight.

Pleasure reading your post. I think I get a bigger kick out of watching my Brittany find birds than shooting at them. This past weekend, my Brittany would not break point from a patch of cover. The patch consisted of chest high grass and thorny shrubs. I tried kicking arount the perimeter, and shaking the branches of the shrubs with no effect. I finally put down the gun and waded into the patch to prove to my Brittany that there were no birds. That is when the partrdge took off. You gotta laugh!!!

The best bird hunting is on the Big Island. They have the most available land for hunting. We have ringneck and blue pheasant, grey francolin partridge, black francolin partridge, chukar partridge, rio grande turkeys, quail and doves.
