Yeah that is sick. Can't imagine why somebody would just shoot the bear and then leave.
I disagree with the biologist though. I don't see how you can directly blame "industry" for the bears poaching. The only person (people?) accountable for this poaching are the poachers themselves, not some vague "industrial activity".
I sometimes wonder if high profile cases like this reflects negatively against all hunters. |

We had a bunch here a couple of years back up in the Moosehead area of Maine that shot I believe 9 moose and 3 deer all in one spot.
And they just left them there to rot didn't do a thing to them. |

There was a famous case of poaching in Colorado a few years back. Estes Park Colorado, which borders on Rocky Mountain National Forest, has many resident elk.
In this resident herd was a regular bull that people nicknamed Samson. Samson was massive and apparently liked being around people; basically a trophy sized pet. Unfortunately he was poached.
The backlash over Samson's death inspired a bronze bust of the elk and created "Samson's Law" in Colorado, creating tougher poaching laws.

I don't think there will be significant backlash. Especially in the local area where the bear was taken. On the TV show they interviewed a lot of people and they all seemed to know the difference between legitimate hunters and poachers. The real focus of the article/show was on the opening-up of the back country and that was the source of most debate.
I agree with Bit that there is no direct connection between poaching and road construction. If "poaching" is the problem then they should address the poaching problem through more CO's.
OPne thing I've noticed about CBC having been in the military and seen firsthand many stories they've reported they're not above exaggerating or spinning the truth for the desired effect. I think this would fall into that category. |

Right or wrong, sometimes I think poaching can make a bad mark on all hunters. In the case of Samson, if he had been taken by legal means it probably would have created an outcry from some vocal (although hopefully small in number) groups. Although perhaps I'm just being a pessimist....
Mary appears to be a big grizzly, Samson was a massize bull. The bigger the more memorable. |
