Blastmaster,

Have you been hunting black bear by spot/stalk?

I'm no expert caller, but since black bears are naturally curious, I imagine any predator call should be a good start.

Are you hunting black bear in California?

Oh yeah and I enjoyed looking at your web site. Looks like the kids were having fun! :wink:

Well, this will be year 3 for me hunting Bear in the D14 in SOCAL. First year was while deer hunting spot and stock. I never hunted the area before so it was mostly scouting mixed in with watching all the LA hunters wander cluelessly by. Last year I was more serious about it an found plenty of scat, tracks, and a possible food source away from the LA deer hunters, but it's not open enough to spot so I'm planning on trying a predator call this year. I just found someone willing to go with me to watch my back.
I think the years of deer hunting have handicaped me, but I'm feelin' like this will be the year of the Bear!

You have the place scouted, a few years under your belt, and you have somebody willing to watch your back; now all you need is the call!

Good luck! Has it been dry in that area of CA? It has been really dry in CO and they are calling for excellent black bear hunting here this year.

Yeah, it's been a bit dry, with some fires around, but there is running water close to the area so I think they'll be there for me.

A friend of mine son just shot a bear out in Montana useing the spot and stock method.
He was carefull enough to get close enough to shoot it with a bow.

I think he said it dressed out to 250lbs.

Maine: where did your friend pickup the bear in montana. I passed up a 6 footer earlier this week I didn't want to pack it 14 miles back to the pick up. We were out mountain goat hunting in the Bob Marshal wilderness. My kid still things I should have pulled the trigger. Maybe next week :smile:

I enjoyed this one more than any because Im an avid bear hunter been doing it for 5 years now and have filled 3 of those years nothing like it. Anyone thinking about trying it should for sure its by far one of the best rushes possible and not to mention the trophy and the meat. Good luck on your hunts boys. The great thing about ontario is baiting is legal but the blackies around here are mean by nature.
