If you had to choose one state IN THE LOWER 48 to do all of your hunting in wich would you choose and why?Alaska is an obvious choice but i am interested in the preference of the lower states,I would choose my home state of Montana because I was born here and I my family owns a couple ranch's here,we also have a ton of public land throughout the state wich offers some of the best trophy class hunting avaliable in the state. We have a great Block Management program that provides access to many large ranchs for hunters and provides some extra income for the land owners who allow hunters access, every year there are more and more areas open to the public. I believe we have one of the best varietys of game and some of the best trophy class animals in the west. Our state also outlawed gamefarm hunting and we no longer have any canned hunts allowed here. Please list the reasons for your choice.

All of my hunting in the lower 48 has been in the extreme western states.
California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and once in the extreme southern part of Idaho. I started out in northern Nevada, the Ruby Mountains/Jackpot. Didn't realize I had crossed into Idaho. Beautiful area.
All said, I would have to go with the state of Washington with it's vast variety of terrain and game animals. Desert, thick forest, low land prairies, wet lands, high mountains.
There is an abundance of land owned by major lumbering companies that is opened for hunting. We've got farm land and orchards. Ranchers in the rural areas will usually allow hunting on their land. If you get prior permission and respect the property. Some of the large military reservations allow hunting with blackpowder or archery.

The reasons go on and on.

My favorite place to hunt would be North Dakota. Main reason is because i have hunted ND for almost 5 years now and i know the land that i hunt like the back of my hand. ND also has some pretty big deer especially in body size not so much with antlers. We also have really good waterfowl and upland game hunting. I have also hunted Colorado for elk. It was a lot of fun and i really wanna go back to hunt mule deer and elk again. I saw some really nice mule deer while i was down there.

If or when I move out west it will be to Colorado. RM Bighorn, Desert Bighorn, Mountain Goat, Elk, Mule Deer, Pronghorn, Moose ....you get all in one state! Not sure if any other state can say that they have huntable populations of all of these within their borders (I could be wrong).

Montana is a very nice state, no doubt. However, it doesn't have Desert Bighorn which is an important one for me.

How many sheep and goat do they allow a resident to take, in Montana. In Wa. you get one of each in a lifetime.
You haven't hunted until you chase after one of these coastal blacktail. They call them "The ghost of the forest". Mulies and Whitetail are like going to a shooting gallery compared to these critters.
The only sheep I would be interested in would be the Dall. Alaska here I come.
These Roosevelts are as big as an Elk gets. The Rack has a different configuration but, it's not uncommon to see one 3" to 4" across at the base and 4' to 5' or more in highth. It's hypnotizing to watch these monsters of the forest. It's amazing how they can get that rack through the trees without getting hung up and they can disappear in a flash.
I get every bit as much enjoyment out of fishing as I do hunting and there's no end to the fresh and saltwater species available. We had a striped Marlin caught off the coast a couple or three of years back. That saltwater is full of surprises when the warm currents move close to shore.
Orcas feeding on seals. Seals feeding on salmon. They get ahold of those salmon by the belly and rip the gut out. Leaving the rest for the bait fish and crabs.
There's never a dull moment in Washington.

You can shoot one of each every year if you are lucky enough to draw a tag or you hunt sheep in the unlimited areas.

Well I'm going to say Alabama. Probably because colorado is the only other state I've hunted. We have very lengthy seasons.

Deer Archery Oct 15-Jan 31
Deer Gun ~Nov. 20 -Jan 31

In all areas you can take a buck everyday. In most areas you can take a doe and buck or two does a day.

Turkey has a split season spring and fall.
Then there are:
Rabbit
Squirrel
Raccoon
Opossum
Bobcats
Coyote
Red Fox
Gray Fox
Quail
Doves
Wild Hogs
Armadillos
Then there are all kinds of other birds.
Not to mention alligators and Black Bears which are both protected.

Now that's not as much as Nonya's list(mainly a lack of big game) but it's enough especially with the high harvest limits and year round fishing opportunities.
