OK due to popular demand I posted another poll this one is slightly more complicated than the last but i have faith in your ability to adapt. If you had to buy one caliber rifle to hunt all of North America for the rest of your life wich would you choose? If your favorite is not listed please post it below!Do any of you already do all of your North American big game hunting with one caliber? Please tell us wich one you chose and why.I chose the 7mm Rem Mag because it has a very managable recoil and great long range accuracy.

This for me is not as difficult a decision as it might be for someone who has lots more years ahead of them climbing those mountains and searching out big game animals in the wild.

I do have a special love for the 300 Win mag, even though some on this forum may be a bit surprized at such a statement. I packed one for over 20 years hunting various species of big game. I really like the effects of the .338 Win mag on large game animals, however if I had to pick just one caliber from now on to hunt with, it would be the .270 Winchester or 30-06.

As nice as some of the other rounds are. I'm sticking with the old faithful 30-06. It's hard to beat the versatility and tolerable recoil. That's my final decision and I'm sticking to it.

Since I won't be shooting passed 400 yards anymore in my hunting quests for big game, I'll stay with the .338 Win MAG!!!

It can be used to take goats off a mountain top with 200 grain or smaller bullets, or it can take down the largest of big bears to boot with a 250 or 275 grain premium bullet. It's muzzle roars with authority when it comes to smacking down big game animals from deer to giant bears or moose.

NONYA.........Like I said couzin! It is very hard for me to just pick one caliber for all my hunting needs OK. Yada Yada Yada on the 30-06 and 270 crowd, however if you hunt the big game animals, both those calibers will soon cause you to question your mind and what your doing. eye roll

Love the 300 & 7mm mag but then again, I won't try facing a big bear with either of those calibers as the third time could be my charm or destruction using them, no thanks OK. eye roll

Now comes the .338 mag with smack down in abundance, at least for North American game. However, best you be thinking of something bigger for any trips to the dark continent my dear fellow. Now comes a nice .416 or better yet my .475 magnum for those things that cause a hunter to have nightmares. lol

It's fascinating. How anyone would desire such punishing rounds in the lower 48. I have yet to see the necessity for anything larger than a 30 cal.
We have some very large critters around here and you'll still see a great many 30-06, 300wm, 300wea and many lesser rounds. In fact, 54 cal smoke poles and 125gr arrows are quite popular for all.
We don't have the browns but, there are plenty of very mean, very large blackies. I haven't seen any rhino around here either. Just a few pink elephants.

There are plenty of big bears killed in Alaska with a .30-06,I know guides who pack a 06 for bear and moose ,a 180gr bullet out of an 06 at close ranges will kill any animal in North America and quickly.I like the extended range of my 7mm but I would not hesitate to take my 06 to Alaska.I cant understand why anyone would want the punishment you get from a 300wm for the small amount of "knockdown power" you gain from the Monster Mags.
