Young Hunter: What gun to buy?

Hello. I am a new hunter in norhtern MN. I am looking to by a rifle mainly for Whitetail, probly in .270 or 30-06. Some models that I have looked at are Rem. 770 and 7400, Stevens 200, Marin XL7, and Savage 111. At first in my search, I thought that the Rem. 770 was the best bang for the buck. But after joining this forum and reading others, I have begun to think otherwise. I am trying to keep the price tag at about $600 or less. Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Welcome to BGH pdp8
I personally have never had any experience with the Remington 770 which is the replacement for the 710. I have heard mixed reviews on both of those and it appears that either you love em or hate them.
The main complaints I heard were they were cheaply made with lots of plastic parts that break easily especially when exposed to cleaning solvents..
All of the praise was that they shoot tight groups and are an accurate rifle for the price.

Having said that I would recommend the Winchester 70 if you could scrape up a little more cash.
Mabe you could also check oh a used Remington 700 also, that is if you don't mind a used rifle. I have had a couple of those and they are fine rifles.
I also had a 7400 and while it shot well it did have a problem with jambing on me.
May consider the Remington 760 or 7600. It is a Pump model and I owned and hunted with one, (a .308) for many, many years with little problems.
Never had any experience with any of the others either.

In terms of calibers, I'm a fan of the .270 for whitetails. I've used a lot of different rifles on deer over the years and the .270 just really seems to be the best combination of size, range, etc. Deer go down pretty quick when you hit them in the boiler room, but it doesn't blow away half the meat either. Good luck.

Can you use a .270 for a very wide variety of game? And is a 30-06 much more versitile?

I can see this post starting some &#&^ Big smile
If you are using up to 150-160 gr bullets, the 270 is the better performer.
Above 160 gr, the 30.06.
The reason is simple. The 270 bullet is .277 inch diameter and the 06 is .308 diameter. Otherwise the cases are identical.
I find no reason to shoot bullets heavier than 150 gr so been using a 270 for decades(moose, bear on occasion, deer)
There is a brand new 30.06 sitting in the closet that belongs to my son. I haven't touched it in at least 12 years or more, no reason to.
The 06 is more popular because it is older, but that's about it, other than it uses 180 gr bullets with great success(by far the most popular bullet weight) and even heavier cartridges are available.
So, that's about it Thumbs up
On rifle choice I would not buy the bottom line model in a centerfire rifle. I would prefer good, used, second hand higher quality, if I had to decide

WHAT !!!!!
You use a "varmint" calibre on Moose and Bear !!!!
Are you outta your @^%*&@ mind !!! neener!

The 270 is a fine choice as Hammer mentioned.
I have not hunted with a 270, only with 30-30, 308, 30-06 and a 7mm wsm but only because they were available at a good price. I never said to myself, "Self you need to get the 30-30, 308, 30-06 or 7mm wsm instead of the 270 cause they're better calibres or cartridges". They just happen to be the calibre in the style of rifle I was looking for.

Yeah, I will most likely get a .270 over a 30-06. For What I will be using it for, it should be the right calibre. The models that I have narowed my search down to all come in .270 and 30-06, so thats good. Do they still make the Rem. 7400 and 7600, or would I need to get a used one? Help! Anyone with info or advice, good or bad, concering a Marlin XL7, Stevens 200, Savage 111 or 110, or Rem. 700 or 770 is needed! Thumbs up Thanks alot!

I think these are all good guns, but I'm leaning towards the Marlin XL7. It has great reviews, it comes in .270, and it you can get it for uner 350$. I was skeptical but forum after forum loves this gun! Thumbs up I think it is a great option for me. tell me what you guys think.
