X-Bolt Rifle Choice

I'm getting ready to purchase a new X-Bolt SS and have narrowed the field to the 300 Win Mag & the 30-06. The rifle will be primarily used for white tailed deer with the possibility of occasional larger game as well. I've gone back and forth between these two models several times but haven't come to a decision - which is why I'm here on biggamehunt! I know that either of these are more than capable of meeting my needs, but I want to hear what you guys think. Outside of the obvious caliber difference, why should I choose the 300 over the 06? One concern with the 300 is the 26" barrel. It would probably be a non-issue, but that's 4 inches longer than what I currently shoot.

I look forward to hearing what you all have to say.

You are trying to compare apples to oranges. They are two completely different cartridges but they are the same caliber. That being said do you really need the extra power that the 300 Win Mag has? The 06 has taken every game animal on the North American continent that you would possibly ever hunt for. As for the 300 mag are you willing to take it out and shoot it to where you get use to the heaver recoil? The 06 will handle any shot out to 300 yards provided you do your part. So if you mainly plan on hunting whitetails in heavy to moderate cover where your shots will be less than 200 yards then the 06 will work quite fine. If it was me and if it was only a possibility to go on a hunt for hunt for elk, moose, sheep, and or a goat I think that I would lean towards the 06.
Just to let you know where I am coming from I have taken mule deer, elk, and a Alaskan brown bear all with a 30.06 not to mention all kinds of other animals with it also.

I AGREE THAT THE '06 WILL BE MORE THAN ADEQUATE FOR WHITETAIL DEER. THE ONLY ADVANTAGE OF THE 300 WIN MAG WOULD BE FOR LONG RANGE 400YDS OR SO. THE 300 WIN CAN SEND HEAVIER BULLET AT GREATER DISTANCE THAN THE '06. OTHERWISE, THEY ARE SIMILAR IN TRAJECTORY.

Reason for the longer barrel on the .300 Win Mag is because you'll need (and want) that extra 4 inches on the barrel with a magnum cartridge in .30 cal
The whole point of a longer barrel with magnums is to utilize as much powder as possible inside tha barrel before the bullet leaves the muzzle.

I'd probably go with the 30-06 for the use you have defined. Then if you decide you want a magnum down the road, then you have a great reason to get another gun. Thumbs up
