Wyoming Red Desert Elk

I just drew an antlerless tag for Wyoming Elk Area 100. I wonder if anyone here has hunted that area and I would like to find out all I can about this area. If you have any tips, special techniques or stories you would like to share, I am all ears.

I understand this is a rather unique area for elk in that it more closely resembles antelope country than elk country but that its well known for its "Red Desert", "Jack Morrow Hills" elk herd.

This will be my first elk hunt so I'm trying to gather all the information I can. I've read four books on elk hunting so far but advice from experienced hunters would be most appreciated.

Wyoming Red Desert Elk

Hi Piute,

I have been hunting elk in the Red Desert since they were originally introduced from Teton Park in 1970. As a kid I used to ride horseback through the elk in the desert there before most people even knew there were elk in the desert.
My wife drew a bull permit for the area this year and as such, we have been doing a lot of scouting. The elk are plentiful, but we are in a natural gas boom around here and so there is alot of traffic in the desert.

Plan for alot of glassing and long range shooting. The most important assets you can have are high quality binoculars and a good spotting scope. You will have no problem finding large numbers of elk, and killing a cow will be very easy. I can always find elk within 30 minutes of my house. Best of luck, if I can be of help don't hesitate to ask.
