Thanks a bunch guys for the kind comments on the buck from Wyoming.
Well after the hunt in Wyoming, my wife and I drove to the Denver airport, left our truck there and flew home to Oregon for a week. A week later, we both flew back to Colorado to catch the last 5 days of the 3rd deer season. I had hunted the unit near Gunnison in the past on my own tag as well as helping out on another hunt in there, so I felt I had a good idea where to start. The deer population is way down after a severe winter kill a few years ago.
After the first day, the weather was just way too good, and all I was seeing was smaller bucks in the lower country I normally hunt. I stopped in at the taxidermist shop in town. I had given him a couple deer capes in the past (since I normally do European mounts now), and we usually talk a couple times a year by phone. He told me about a couple new areas I should check out. Both areas held much better bucks then I had been seeing. On the next to the last morning, I saw a very wide 3 point at first light. He was moving quickly down a ridge 1000 yards away. When he dropped behind it, I took off at an angle to hopefully put me out in front of him. As I neared the spot, I jumped a couple does, but they moved away pretty slowly. Then I bumped several more does that took off straight away like they were headed into the next county. I figured it was all over. I threw up my binoculars to see if the buck was trailing them. I then saw this buck headed full tilt directly at me. He was covering about 10 yards in every jump. He was at about 150 yards when I first saw him. All I had was a small juniper in front of me, so I waited until he was about 70 yards out... I took a small step off to the side. The buck filled my scope. His eyes bugged out and it looked as if he was saying...oooohhh crud....lol. I touched off my 300 WSM and he dropped like a rock. The bullet entered the neck and exited just above the tail.
It was a great trip...my wife and I enjoy Gunnison and we had some great meals and Garlic Mike's. If you are ever there, you have to try it. Some of the best Italian food we have ever had.
I have attached a pic of my buck from Colorado.
