Wyoming General Elk Tag

I'm planning on going to Wyoming next year for a mule deer/elk hunt, purchasing a general license (archery). I feel pretty comfortable for my mule deer, as I have hunted the Shirley Mountains before with my dad (I was the helper, never the hunter). I would like to get a general elk license, but I have had people tell me I am wasting my money. Has anyone hunted around Medicine Bow for elk with a general elk tag? Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I want to make sure I am making a wise investment.

I have hunted the Medicine Bow for many years, grew up outside of Laramie. As for it being a waste of time and money, I do not think so. There are a lot of ELK and a lot of country up there. If you would like more information send me a PM

The success rates for hunting elk in Wyoming are high compared to nearby states. I don't think you would be wasting your time or money.

Some preference point limited draw areas in Wyoming are up to 20 years out already for Non-Residents. This might be why people are saying you are wasting your money. Wyoming's preference point system essentially creates a wait list. A lot of areas in wyoming are looking at needing 3 pref. points this year. The problem is 200 guys have the max points, and there are only 10 tags given out, so even if you start applying now and buy your point, you are more than likely looking at about 20 years before you draw, because those 200 people have preference before you.

The general tag is still holding up in the preference point draw. You should be able to draw with 0 points. But don't be sure. I believe the odds will be around 50%, I will check my statmap in google earth and let you know how long the wait list is for the general tag.

Actually i was wrong. For the non-resident preference point draw for the general tag, don't count on drawing for 2 years unless you already have a point. There are 114 applicants who will have 2 points next year, and 3,329 who will have 1. Their were 1513 licenses given to Nonres last year, so if you apply next year and buy your points, you can expect to draw in 3-4 years.\

Let me know which draw you were shooting for and if you have any points.

Another option would be to pay the extra money and go into the Special general Draw. In the 2008 draw, you had a 31% chance of drawing a general elk tag with 0 points.
