Just wondering what the elk situation is like in this area?  What size bull can a man take if he is picky?  Are there large herds here?  Thanks in advance.Help!Whistling

Bump

please, anyone, I can't find hardly any info about it on the Internet. It's my dream to kill an elk on a wilderness hunt and I just want to know what 61 is like. Thanks.

You should have a pretty good chance of killing a decent bull there. There is a lot of wilderness in that unit, and a lot of pretty rugged terrain. I dont know what size a trophy is for you, but just like everywhere else the larger the bull the lower the odds. Are you going with an outfitter or a wyoming resident? Your chances probably go way up with an outfitter, horses etc.

You didnt say what type of tag you have, or if you will be hunting with a rifle or bow.

Thanks

Patrick. Thanks for the response. A trophy would be any elk, I gues. I am looking for 330+. I am going with a WY resident but he does a heck of a lot of hunting. I hAve hunted mulies in the past with him. We are horse packing in 14 miles to try and get out there a bit. We are planning on about 10 days in the wilderness. Still good odds?

Great!

That sounds about as good as it gets. If you havent been in that unit before there are a few photos on google earth that give a decent representation of the type of terrain on the relatively dry east slope of the mountains in that area.

Has your friend hunted that unit before? I would think he would be the best source of information. I will be hunting there in December, hopefully after the weather has driven the elk a little lower Thumbs up .

Sorry Patrick I overlooked a

Sorry Patrick I overlooked a question in your comment. I will be hunting with z rifle. I got a type 1 license that I can shoot any elk with. I will hold out for a nice bull. Planning on bring back there for atleast 8-10 days. My buddy has never hunted this area before. I have done some research but was hoping someone on here had hunted this area or has some good info. I am so stoked that I am already having trouble sleeping. Dancing

REALLY

I find it hard to believe that only one person has responded to this post in over a month. I got on this websight for information and I guess because I am from the east coast you won't give it to me. This is a western( for the most part) forum and nobody has hunted in area 61? WHATEVER!! If you don't want to help so be it, but I have always held a special place in my heart for westerners. Please just give me some info.

Getting help

I am a easterner too, and i go on a lot of different sites, from what i have found, if your new to a site, you wont get much info from people, they work hard to find good areas to hunt, and they wont give them up, and i don't blame them, i wont give up my spots either, and there may not be many people on here that know much about the unit your interested in.

go to the States web site, it will give you tons of info.

Thanks Bucky, I will check that out. I am not asking for a spot to hunt, I already know about where we are going to camp and hunt based off of aerial photos and topo maps. I am simply just asking about the hunting in the area. I have already drawn my tag. I'm just saying that anyone could ask me about where to kill a smoker whitetail in WV and I would tell them exactly where to go. That's all.

You may want to check out other forums too, like Primos hunting calls - forum or bowsite.com.
