WOW! What a hunt

Just got back from my hunt last night.  It was a fantastic hunt!  I think the peak of the rut must have been last week because the rutting activity was intense and non-stop.  Never experienced hearing literally hundreds of bugles and cow calling bull elk into under 50 yards over a dozen times in only a couple of days hunting.  I knew we were in for a special hunt when we called in a "rag horn" 6x7 bull (had no cows, not a herd bull) within 15 minutes the first morning.

I will post more details and photos in a story later--way too much info to put down right now.  I did end up finding someone to hunt with.  A brother of 2 great hunting partners whom I had never even met.  Really great hunter and a super partner, everything turned out great there too.

We did harvest 2 nice cows, and although I'm a firm believer of never passing on harvest opportunities when meat hunting, I was sorry the hunt ended the second day when I shot the second cow.  Was one of the best hunts I've ever experienced.

First rifle guys should have pretty good rutting activity this weekend too.

Hope everyone else's hunts turn out to be such a great time and more than they expect too!

Congratulations on a great

Congratulations on a great hunt. I love it when the elk are talking so much even if your not actually hunting for them. Looks like you'll have plenty of meat for the freezer this year.

My son and I were out this morning for his either sex tag in 444 but we didn't hear a sound this week. not even any coyotes. We did see a few elk but he decided to pass on the cows as it was opening morning and we have a lot of meat already. Maybe in a couple more days if we get the chance again.

What was strange is that for the first itme in years there was nobody else going into the same area where we go. We did actually see abull but it was a bit to far off and decided to wait for it to get closer since it was heading our way. Well we were surprised as while we were watching it pass the 500 yard mark we heard a shot and he dropped in his tracks. Another hunter had come in off of private land instead of walking 2 miles like we did and killed him right in front of us. He had to have shot over 500 yards as we couldn't even see the guy till 15 minutes after he fired.

That's the way it goes but my son was sure dissappointed. Maybe Monday as we both have to work tomorrow.

Now that's a kick in the head...

Geez.  If that ain't a kick in the head.  Watching the bull your working get shot right in front of you--I guess that's how it goes sometimes but it sure does pretty much SUCK.

Good luck next week when you get back at it.  It'd be pretty cool to add another nice bull to your family collection for this year, eh.

We got out for a few hours

We got out for a few hours tonight after work but only saw a bunch of does on public land. We did see a herd of elk with a pretty good bull come down into a private field from the wrong side that we couldn't get to. Hopefully they will move up into the public tonight nad we'll get a crack at them in the morning. Looks like some weather moving in so it could be interesting.

Congrats on the great looking

Congrats on the great looking cow. She looks like she will taste mighty good. I'm glad everything worked out for you, and the fact that your hunting buddy bailing on you last minute didn't ruin your hunt. It is funny how things kinda work out for the best when at first seems like a crappy deal. Looks like you should have plenty of meat for your freezer this winter. Do you have any more hunts coming up or was this it for the year? again congrats and thanks for sharing some pictures with us. (looks like you remebered your camera).

A couple more hunts to go

I agree, it is funny how things work out sometimes.  I always try to be low key and flexible, no sense in getting too worked up about things.  The whole hunting partner thing gave me a belly ache for an hour or so, but when I got up the next day everything just fell into place.  Turns out my new partner could really use the meat too, so he took a cow home with him.  Worked out great for both of us!

My son has a cow tag for unit 201 (2nd rifle) starting this Saturday.  He is super excited.  He didn't stop talking the entire time we processed our elk last weekend--just wanted to be involved in everything up to his elbows.  That's probably our last elk hunt for this year.  We may consider doing a late season hunt over by Craig too, but that's probably a longshot at this point.

We have a whitetail deer hunt scheduled for Nebraska as well.  That will also be more of a youth hunt focus for us.  Still a great time and probably more fun getting the kids involved.

Take care and good hunting to you for the rest of the year too!
