Dear exp,

I, too, am at a loss for words. I will borrow from 777.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss (and our's) . God Bless you and your family. Thank you for raising such a couragious young man to help fight for our freedom. Like a lot of the other members on BGH I feel like you are a friend and this news makes me truely sad.

And, yes, I (we) will heed your advice ... to take advantage of every moment we have with them while we can.

On Sunday, our family got the worst news imaginable. Our oldest son was killed in action in Iraq on 10 December. Apparently he was a gunner on an up-armored humvee on a late night combat patrol in Baghdad when they were struck by an IED. Believe me, there's nothing worse in this world than having an Army colonel and chaplain show up at your door. No -- I take that back. What's worse is going upstairs to tell your wife.

He was a tremendous patriot doing what he dreamed of doing his whole life. He was a paratrooper and lived life to the fullest. Words can't do justice to the devastation to the family, but faith is carrying us.

If you have kids, don't waste a moment -- savor every minute of time you have with them.

Don't fret......your son was standing with our Lord Jesus....30 minutes before the Devil knew he was gone!!

One more Irishman....that has done his duty....and given all for his famly, friends, and country!

My heart goes out to you and your family! Losing a son/daughter....has to be the most 'heart wrenching' experience known to mankind!

God does not give a man/famly.....more burden than their shoulders can bear!!

Keep the faith!

SEMPER FI!!

Expatriate, how are you and your family doing? You've been on my mind all week and my heart aches for you. Having kids myself, I can only imagine the heartache you must be experiencing.

I am still at a loss for words, but its been heartwarming to see what a sense of community we have developed here on BGH. I believe every one of us has shed tears for you as we read this thread and typed our condolences.

I just wish there was more we can say or do for you.

Yea Buddy,

I am not a religious man but sem's like religious people burn candles at times like these. I burned one all night for your son when I heard. Figured it was what I should do.

PS:

Thanks again, everybody. We're heading out tomorrow to be in place for the funeral on friday. We're doing OK, and things are going to be fine. His company commander called me yesterday from Iraq and said that on the night Shawn died another soldier was sick and Shawn volunteered to take his place on the mission. That is so like him.

We just found out that the Army has promoted him posthumously to Specialist and awarded him the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. I'm one proud father.

The outpouring of condolences has been amazing, and we're truly touched by all the support. Thank you all so much. God Bless all of you.
