WONDERING WHERE TO GO FOR A COW ELK IN COLORADO

I AM PLANNING A FIRST TRIP TO COLORADO FOR A COW FOR NEXT YEAR (2006), AND TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHERE TO GO. AND AM ALSO WONDERING IF MY BEST BET IS TO PUT IN FOR A DRAWING FOR A COW TAG OR WAIT FOR AN OVER THE COUNTER, AND PUTTING IN FOR A PREFERANCE POINT FOR A BULL TAG. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT.

WONDERING WHERE TO GO FOR A COW ELK IN COLORADO

Wisconsin;
First of all, welcome to BGH.

I am assuming you are looking to do it yourself rather than using an outfitter. My recommendation is to look at the White River part of the state. Meeker is the town in the area. Game management units 11, 12, 211, 23, 24. All of these units have a fair amount of pulic land. I recommend this area mainly because the elk population is above objective and in attempt to control the population, the DOW is making many cow tags available. Just about everywhere west of the continental divide has good opportunities. Depends on if you have somewhere in mind that you want to go.

I would not recommend waiting for a cow license OTC. Even though they have been available the last few years, that is no guarantee they will be this coming year. You should go through the draw process. Go to the DOW website:
http://wildlife.state.co.us

There is a huge amount of info there that will keep you busy many cold winter nights and maybe give you some idea of where to go based on success of hunters in years past. The application deadline will be posted there as well.

Another decision you will have to make is, which season will you be hunting? Good thing you are starting this process now and not in July or August. If you can narrow things down on the season and the general area, then I think you will have more luck with getting recommendations.
Good Luck

You might want to consider the December season in the NW area of Colorado, by then the elk are down and getting a cow should be pretty painless.

There is an enormous amount of information to sort through when you are getting started. The Division of Wildlife publishes a magazine called Colorado Outdoors. Over the course of a year the magazine will publish info like success rates for various units and various seasons, ratios of bulls to cows on various herds, sizes of various herds, and some articles even have help for first timers getting started. Most of this data is also available somewhere on the website.
Application deadline is usually the first week of April.
If you hunt a CWD area you'll want to get your animal tested (DOW calls it getting your head examined ). We do that even though we don't hunt a CWD area.
Also, some of the feature articles on this website provide some excellent information that I have not seen anywhere else.
Methods/tactics of hunting can vary because the terrain can be so different in different regions of Colorado. Once you select an area or areas where you are sure you can draw a tag, have public land, and otherwise suit you, then you can refine your research. The DOW also publishes summer range and winter range info for each herd, and resident herd info. With the warm hunting seasons we have been having in recent years it has been good to pay attention to where those summer range areas are.
