I saw the story, and it certainly sounds like a great specimen. Mammoth finds aren't very rare -- you see a lot of jewelry for sale up here made out of mammoth ivory, and I could swear I saw a vendor somewhere that was selling mammoth grips for 1911s and peacemakers. Tusks are relatively easy -- but a complete animal with hair and all is a rare find, indeed.

I saw a show on the Discovery Channel some time ago documenting the recovery of an intact mammoth out of the ice in Siberia. They commented that as the warm air hit the animal and the hide thawed, they could smell mammoth while they were working. I'd think that experience would be absolutely mind blowing.

Im not sure but I was talking to a friend about the same thing them cloning it would be cool indeed, and on the note of it being a rare find they are saying it is the worlds most valuble find this baby mammoth so I think this one is a little different from all the other ones found.

I saw the article the other day.Another baby mammoth was found entoomed in a block of ice many years ago,but not in such great condition.
I also saw the Discovery Channel show on the Siberian mammoth excavated from the frozen tundra. The hope was there that some intact DNA would be found for cloning, but apparantly it was not good enough. Some Japanese expert had offered to try the cloning.
In Yukon too, mammoth bones and ivory are often discovered by gold placer miners digging in the ground. In fact mammoth ivory is sold in tourist and gift shops there.
When I get back to Yukon someday I hope to buy a piece of mammoth ivory to fashion or decorate a nice hunting knife handle. Yes
