Can someone explain what the DNR is trying to do to big game hunting in Wisconsin?

The Wisconsin DNR has been proven to be way off on the bear estimates and the hunters in Wisconsin have been saying they are off on the deer estimates for years as well and it has also been proven true. The deer kill was down over 20% in 2008. They also claim the wolf population has not increased from 2007 - 2008, but depredation on livestock is up almost 20%, how can a scientist agree with that estimate.

The comment made by the WDNR big game biologist that with the increased number of bears more people will have a chance to see these animals in the wild. "Give me a break" I grew up in bear country when I was young and spent countless hours in the woods and I can count on one hand all the bear my entire family saw in the wild. I think the DNR is managing the big game populations not for population control or the benefit of the hunter, but for animal activist.

I put in for the Non resident draw in WI for next year. The hunting club that I am in has a lease in Douglas County that has bear all over it. The guys that deer hunt the place said they could have shot bear with their bows almost every day... From what I can tell it looks as if it should take around 7 years or so to draw... but with the new population estimates it maybe shorter...

I think the WDNR is being run by the Sierra Club or some other organization with the same agenda; we have the following to consider:

#1 An over abundance of bear we are not allowed to hunt.
#2 Elk have been introduced to the state we are not allowed to hunt.
#3 Cormorants are destroying the perch population in Lake Michigan.
#4 Deer population is being decimated, which is discouraging hunters and deterring young hunters from taking up the sport.
#5 Wolf populations are out of control, a danger to the public and our deer population.
#6 CWD a rare and naturally occurring disease has consumed the DNR, its policies and budget.

I’m sure I missed a number of other items as well. Feel free to ad to the list.

Maybe now that the WDNR has blown their budget and lost some of their high tech toys for awhile they can all be issued some snow shoes and a new tablet and pencil for some real animal counts.

Think that will happen? I doubt it too. They just want to fly around sightseeing and playing with their laptops at taxpayer expense. Anyone who has dealt with this bloated, state subsidized welfare department already knows that they don't serve the public. They only cater to the same special interest groups that got the current legislators and governor elected. To call them "scientists" is an insult to academia. They're not paid to do anything but say no to private landowners and yes to anti-hunting activist groups.

Discouraging hunting and trapping is their mission and we taxpayers are sponsoring them. How can we stop them? That's a great question. Every year they get their hooks into more and more programs and are able to dictate policy through regulatory process versus legislative action. The people have no say and they are not responsible to the same people who send them their substantial budgets...not to mention paychecks.

When they get it wrong they quickly schedule a public hearing and then ignore all of the input because after all "we're the scientists". If they really feel that their precious budgets may be in danger they set up a citizen's committee of well meaning taxpayers who they proceed to ignore as well.

How can we stop this bureaucratic nightmare? I have a proposal. It's called the "No Sportsman/woman Left Behind Program". The WDNR would have to meet established success rates for all programs they administer and then be graded by their bosses...we taxpayers! How revolutionary! The idea of a state agency being required to meet their objectives, on schedule and within budget and be responsible to their employers would be...well democracy! If they failed we could cut their inflated wish lists and maybe even hand out a few pink slips.

Whew! Where did that crazy dream come from? Shame on me. I'm a heretic for even suggesting that a government program be scrutinized and held to a standard. Now my PC will be monitored, my phones tapped and next will be a tax audit. As a WDNR officer once remarked to one of his cohorts while waiting in line at Cabelas, "Warrant...I don't need a warrant...we're pretty much above the law". Oh yeah he was in uniform...on duty.

Now if they could just teach them how to count past ten without taking their boots off.....

I couldn't agree more, not only is the WDNR out of control in the wildlife area, but in building and wetlands. They have forced businesses to build in other states, because they take so long to approve permits or play games with land owners. I talked with a friend who was an employee of the WDNR in the wetlands area and he said the WDNR is a joke. What passes in one county gets turned down in another and it has nothing to do with the county authorities. From first hand experience I have seen where WDNR permits are handed out in 30 days to the astonishment of local elected officials only because the builder had a friend in the department. Some how we have to make the WDNR more accountable to the people of the state of Wisconsin, I have contacted my elected officials many times with issues involving the WDNR and have even received a phone call from the WDNR in Madison to discuss my complaint. All elected officials have email and it is the best way to reach them.

I wouldn’t say I am anti- WDNR but I am very unhappy with the way they operate, they have no common sense and little care for the average person. It is there way or no way. Just a little note I had a relative who was fishing with his 5 year old son and 2 wardens came motoring up to there boat at quite a high rates a speed and while checking licenses the warden operating the motor kept his hand on his gun and the 5 year old said to his father “are they going to shoot us dad”. After hearing this the warden checking licenses was apparently the supervisor and had some common sense told the warden to remove his had from his gun.

You guys are absolutely right. I hunt in an area that has been eab for two years now, and the doe tags have been unlimited for the last 7 years ( for a nominal fee they might as well give them away). They tell us that if we shoot lots of does we won't be eab. We shoot the sh** out of the does and the next year guess what eab. Our neighbors to our farm have been shooting outrageous numbers of does (some years as many as 20 to 30) since the cheap "herd control" tags. The last three years our deer numbers have sucked. Our group of eight guys say a grand total of 5 deer all season. Then the dnr tells us we are gluttens and the reason the numbers are down is because we were stupid to shoot lots of does. Come on they are the ones that told us the herd was too high and to shoot the does. The wisconsin dnr is the biggest joke in game and fish departments in the whole country. I just hope that we can get it turned around so that my 18 month old doesn't have to hear about the "good old days" when we could at least see deer!!

The WI DNR is a bunch of pollitical appointees who can't find their arse with both hands. They can't count, add or give an honest opinion to the hunters in our state. Every thing they say is bologny. They are in a erradication mode for the Whitetail deer. You have people running the DNR who don't hunt or fish.

I'll be honest with you and say that I don't know anything about them and I don't have an opinion either way.

If you talk to the local DNR wardens they will tell you that the deer populations are way down, but Madison still wants more deer killed off. My son is about ready to hang it up, we used to see deer every year on his stand and typically shot 1-2 bucks off of it, but for the last 2 years have not seen a deer on that stand.

The DNR talks about wanting to get more youth involved in hunting to preserve the tradition, but if the young hunters don't see deer they won't stay hunting for long.
