The Winchester Model 70 will return

I'm sure many have already heard the news. Just read it in American Rifleman. Fabrique Nationale will take on production of the Winchester Model 70 rifle and plans to have deliveries to dealers in June 2008. The rifles will be made at FNH USA plant in South Carolina, where US service M-16s, SAWs, and some other US military weapons are made. Not sure why FN just didn't automatically shift production to South Carolina when they decided to shut down USRAC in New Haven, Conn in 2006.

I am glad to see FN is making the model 70. Now if they will just bring back the model 94. I think the reason they didn't shift to SC immediately was to do with the union.

Will it still be called the win Mod 70? I'm afraid that if the exact same rifle was made and marketed my Marlin, nobody would buy it.

Yeah it will still be branded Winchester Model 70 with license agreement from Olin Corp to use the name. I think the model 94 and 1300 are to be built there too. Fabrique Nationale actually is the parent company to US Repeating Arms Corp, Browning, and Muroku.

Truth is that Winchester actually has not manufactured firearms since it sold the business and factory to US Repeating Arms around 1981 or so. From then on FN has actually controlled the facility that made Winchesters under license from 1981 until March of 2006.

FN Herstal just happens to have another US subsidiary in S.C. called FNH USA, mostly to produce military weapons under contract with the DoD.

As many of you know, FN in Belgium is where the vast majority of the pre-1989 Browning sporting arms have been made, including the pre-1980 Auto-5 shotguns and vintage Superposed shotguns, as well as the FAL Assualt Rifle and the Browning P-35 HP pistol. Also a great many other military small arms have been made under contract for various other countries and militaries there too. And where John M. Browning did a lot of his work from.
