I'm counting on it! .... and only shoot premium 30-06 ammo when in the field for every advantage a hunter can get.

Will it....yes.

Would in just about every individual situation there be a better suited calibre...probably.

But if you want a one for everything round - factoring in recoil, cost, availability of rifle and ammo, versatility, accuracy and stopping power I'm quite certain that the 30-06 will make the top 3 of anyone's "best all-round cartridge" list

With the federal high energy loads the 30-06 approaches 300 win mag vel. and as such will take any animal in N.A. and abroad.

ChesterGolf said it best with using Federal High Energy or Hornady Lite Magnum ammo that basically turns a 30-06 into a magnum.

In addition, using a bullet that's very aerodynamic can make a difference as well, as shown in this example (below) using Winchester data.

When comparing a bullet's energy in a 30-06 versus a 300 Win Mag, if you put a premium 180-gr. Nosler AccuBond bullet in a 30-06 at 2,750 fps MV and compare it to a plain jane Winchester 180-gr. Power Point in a 300 Win Mag at 2,960 fps MV, the 30-06 AccuBond will have an amazing 104 ft. lbs more energy at 300 yards: that's right - 2,005 versus 1,901 (Source: Winchester's 2005 Ammo Catalog, p. 10 - 13).

This is called Ballistic Efficiency!

Note: Federal, Hornady, and Remington all report similar data when comparing premium ballistically efficient bullets to their standard line, with a 30-06 being equal to 300 Win Mag performance. Basically, the principle is the same as outline above.

Nosler AccuBond

The 30-06 180-gr. AccuBond with a BC of .509 easily makes up for and surpasses the 210 fps velocity advantage the 180-gr. Power Point had (to begin with) because of its much lower BC of only .349.

In short, an aerodynamic bullet with a high BC can turn a regular caliber like the 30-06 into a magnum, as far as performance is concerned and in this case, the 30-06 180-gr. AccuBond outperforms a 300 Win Mag 180-gr. Power Point at 300 yards, but give the 300 Win Mag the AccuBond and the tables are reversed.

In summary, there's two ways to get extra performance out of a 30-06:

1. Upgrade to High Energy or Lite Magnum ammo.
2. Upgrade to a premium bullet with a high BC for more energy downrange.

Suggest you consider using caution when mentioning to a 300 Win Mag enthusiast that a 30-06 can equal the performance of his beloeved weapon at 300 yards.

Some of them are not familiar with how far ammo and bullet design have come these days and will be subjectively shocked Think to hear you relay objective data they've never heard of before - almost to the point of disbelief or calling you a ....... . Evil!

Remember, we're talking about topnotch (new technology) bullets in a 30-06 and plain jane (30 year old technology) bullets in the 300 Win Mag. Put the premium ammo in a 300 Win Mag and the roles are easily reversed; back to where the 300 Win Mag enthusiast had in mind.

Steve

P.S. I only use this example because the average 300 Win Mag hunter does not use premium ammo and just buys whatever Walmart has on hand - i.e. Winchester 180-gr. Power Points or Remington 180-gr. Core Lokts.

You're right. The 300 Winchester Magnum won't kill anything the 30-06 can't also kill. The .300 just gives you a somewhat flatter trajectory, and enables you to use heavier bullets more efficiently.

If loaded properly for the intended game. The 30-06 is the most versatile round. Bar none.
From small game pelts to the largest of the North American game. Plinking to competition shooting.
It may not be the best choice for each individual situation but, it's not a slouch in any individual situation.
A very good all around choice.

Not meaning to go back on my initial thoughts - but for me the 30/06 gets iffy for big bears (Browns and Polars)...although they're not exactly "traditional" NA game.

The 30-06 will work fine on brown and polar bears, provided good bullet selction and shot placement are used. The ability of a .300 or .338 Magnum to handle heavier bullets (200 grains and heavier) with more efficiency would come into play in those situations. In that case, they would have an advantage.

I said it was "iffy" not useless. In my opinion the 30/06 is the absolute bare minimum big bear calibre. I would not reccomend hunting them with anything lighter.
