Why is IL a shotgun only state?

I have what may seem like a silly question to ask, and am looking for some pros and cons.

Why is Illinois a shotgun only state when it comes to deer hunting. You can hunt coyotes with a rifle, why not deer. I'm looking forward to any input that anyone has to offer. Think

Thats interesting...I wasn't aware of IL being like that.....in PA there is only a few counties that are shotgun/bow only but I believe that has to do with lack of hunting land & more homes in the area....but I know IL doesn't lack any land!

Only thing I can think of is because most of the state is pretty flat and a lot of livestock is raised here. I know there are other states that fit that same description, but that's the only logical explanation I can come up with.

Part of the reason has to be the amount of people that hunt in this state every year. But I could be wrong.

I figured that the reason you could hunt coyotes with a rifle and not deer was because there were many more deer hunters than coyote hunters. But do you think that there is more deer hunters in Illinois than any of the other rifle states like Kansas, Wisconsin, or even Pennsylvania.

My step dad, who lives in Texas, seems to think that the shotgun only laws contribute to the massive deer in Illinois. But the states that I mentioned above also have massive deer, and I would think that the quality and quantity of food are the reason for the size of the deer here in Ilinois.

I agree with the food being a big reason for the size of deer. Also good cover.

re: rifles in illinois

Ohio has similiar hunting rules where coyote are the only game in which you can hunt with a rifle. The reason ohio has this rule (outside of all the liberals) is that the density of the woods does not allow for many high powered rifle shots. This compounded with the amount of irresponsible hunters which cause accidents keeps hunters like you and me from being able to use rifles.

From what I understand the reason is because of the amount of people deer hunting here, which increases the likelyhood of fatalities.

IN--Shotgun

Well, Indiana Is Mostly Shotgun/Archery also. About to buy a new shotgun and was coming for any info about them.I'll be using it for mainly deer, trap and some waterfowel. I don't know much about these 2 shotguns but I know I want a Remington just because thats what I've always used and thats what my dad and grandfather used. So any info on these two guns I'd really appreciate it.

I'm looking at a Remington 870 Express and a Remington 11-87 Sportsman.
