I did end up making it to NE for two trips. We made a day trip on 4/22, and my dad and my brother both got turkeys. My dad got a tom and my brother got a jake. I carried my bow for an 8 mile hike.
The following weekend, I made it back to NE with a friend. This time, I was carrying my shotgun. By 7:30 on Saturday morning, my buddy was tagged out with a nice tom. It was the first turkey I ever successfully called in, and his first turkey on his first turkey hunting trip. Talk about some major beginner's luck! Nine more miles, lots of miserable weather, and lots of blown opportunities later, and I ended that day without a turkey.
The next day, I passed on a jake at about 10 yards about a mile into my hunt. Even though I was close to the bird, it likely would have fallen ~50 ft, making the recovery rather difficult. Luckily, six miles later, a tom gave me the opportunity I needed to not regrett passing on that jake. My 12 guage with 3 1/2' Ultra Mags in #4 shot did its job at 50+ yds.
Here are a couple pics of our birds. I did not end up with a picture of my dad's bird, but if I get a copy, I will post it.
