If by an average bear you mean one in the 100 to 150 lb. range, a .243 would be acceptable to me, but if you are talking 300 lbs. as your average black bear (more to the truth) you want a caliber with a little more power. A black bear when wounded can be a dangerous animal and you don't want to be poking around in the bushes looking for him when he might be wanting to meet up with you. You want to ne taking shots under 150 yards. This is a matter of safety and bullet placement. You want to have plenty of time for a second shot before he can be on you. The average hunter is not proficient enough to shoot a small bore on this size of bear. Don't fool yourself into being under gunned. Buy an insurance policy on your cousin.....you might be able to cash in some time.

Generally speaking:

I usually recommend choice of caliber behind bullet construction and shot placement, but I agree that you're pushing your luck with hunting bear with such a small caliber where tough bullets are not always available.

You'd be much less likely to collect on an insurance policy with a .277 caliber, preferably .308 diameter bullets like a 30-06 and up.

I think a .243 would be fine as long as you use a good hard bullet like a fail-safe. I have a .243 and love it. It is easier to place a bullet exactly where you want it, but if I go bear hunting I will be taking my 7mm instead.

I've taken many deer with my .243,but never tried it on bear.I'm sure it would do the job.Like any gun, knowing what it is capable of,and good shot placement is the key.

For me...it's nothing but my 30-06 for bears.
