The Salmon River is a long river ... on the nasty, steep, rocky, open stuff - mule deer. Timbered brushy draws and forests, whitetail. Transition between ag and steep - both. Ag land - mostly whitetail. Fun. Beautiful country. Cottonwood is not too far from Grangeville, and similarly close to the breaks of the Salmon. I have not hunted there - but have likewise heard good things.
sorry to get back on here so late. For starters if you are staying in grangeville there are alot of different places to go if look on a map you will see hwy 13 to the east of grageville this goes to kooski and there is a lot of access roads that can be easly worked around to elk city. the other way to go is over mt Idaho and down to hwy 14 and out to elk city agian there is a lot of roads that head into the gosspel hump and and bunch that go to american falls and elk city. I am advicating roading hunting but it will provide you with a lot of spots to go and park. The problem with the salmon breaks near cottonwod is that a lot of it is private. Aslo Access Yes has a nice group of lands near peck which is easly gotten to from the hwy from grangeville to lewiston there is another near winchester I have been to both and they look good and I have seen some deer on both.

THe first pic is of buck I shot 2 years ago in kamiah, The second is of a buck my borther shot the 3 years ago within 50 yards of were I shot the mule deer, the third is mine form 3 years ago I shot it near red river. Just north and east of kamiah and kooski is a lot of state and timber land.If you think any of the previous info might help pm me and I ll try and hook you up. I just dont want to tell every one in the world were some good spots are.
Clearwaterart,
I sent you a PM. I'm not sure it was sent.

Hey 270,
I do have a whitetail tag and will be headed up to the Grangeville area again either late this week or early next week. I'll keep you posted on what I see if I get back before the 13th.
Thanks to everyone for posting some good info on the area.
Badger
I'm not going up until the 16th. I would love to hear about your hunt and what you see.
Goodluck!

Badger, Art, and 270 ... it's so cool to see people link up and help one another out. Nice animals Clearwater art.
serious
I think you could help to because I have made a lot of calls and the pop and size seems to be down (wolves, blue tounge disease). I am giving 270wsm abunch of info on 8, 8a, 11, and 11a areas.
I don't have an honey-holes, but if you show up on my doorstep, I'll either drop you off at a spot or clomp around with you (Unit 8). I am also going to call a landowner tomorrow night to confirm permission to hunt some stuff in 8A. A friend is coming up from south Idaho about that time - if you overlap we'll make it a threesome. He's from Poky - dunno where you other guys are from.
As for numbers, stats, etc. ... I have not been making calls ... just observing. There seems to be as many deer around here (Latah County) as last year, perhaps a tiny bit less ... and the deer are plentiful. (I don't think the disease of 03 got up on the hill here). There are big bucks around - but they are hiding.
Just got back from Grangeville on the 1st LOTS of Deer and the rut was just starting ( shot a smaller 5 by 5 )those of you that are going to be there later this month better take your rattling horns (its going to hot !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) GOOD luck !!
