Whitetail Hunting Around Grangeville Id.

Can anyone tell me how the Whitetail hunting is around Grangeville Idaho. I'm coming up there in a couple of weeks but have never hunted there before. What can I expect in acouple of weeks?

Any other info that might help me would be great!

I'm still looking for help on where to hunt in the riggins to moscow area. I will be staying in Grangeville so anywhere in that area.

I would also like to hear how the hunt is going for whitetails in this region.

Thanks for your help!

There was a die-off in 2003 but whitetail deer can spring back pretty fast. Old bucks may be hard to find - but they are going to be hard to find anyway. Around Grangeville you'll find both whitetail and mule deer. When we hunt mule deer we occasionally see whitetail. The mule deer there are controlled hunt - so don't pull trigger on a mule deer. I'm not sure what to say. Pick a draw that looks good - get permission - and go at it. The whitetail deer are going to be generally lower in elev on farm and ranch land. The mule deer will be on the really steep stuff, and up in the forests.

I have always been intrigued by the area just SW of Grangeville. Coming from southern Idaho come up over Whitebird Hill/Summit ... as you come down the other side, with prairie in the distance, just as you hit the flat, go about another half mile, HARD left, there is some land off to the left that looks good. I have always wanted to hunt that area. Can't hurt to ask. If they say `no' - just keep going, and ask the next place. I can see the place in my mind's eye, but remember to think of the names on the mailboxes.

Lots of deer around Moscow - and everywhere in between - but Moscow is another 2 hours north. There's some indian res. land between Grangeville and Moscow and I don't know the hunt-ability of such.

That's my 2 cents. If you hunt that spot after the hard left (hard left, go about a mile - where the road bends right (north) - look off to your left. Brush, good stuff. If you get to the Tolo Lake dinosaur thing you have gone past where I am thinking. Let me know how you do. You can hunt in proxy for me, if they'll let you on. Take pics.

I haven't heard how the hunting is for WT this year there.

Dark minus 60 minutes - you'll probably see deer all over the place.

Just got back from the Grangeville area. This was the first time that I had been to this area, I have only lived in Idaho since June. It was not what I had expected. Not sure if you have ever been to the area or not. I hunted about 30 miles east of Grangeville off Hwy 14. The area was much steeper and more covered than I had expected. Thought I would go up there and glass some areas for whitetails, but it was very thick with pines. I did see some doe whitetails and alot of good trails that the deer and elk had been using, but I did not see any bucks. Saw alot more deer closer to Grangeville when I was leaving just before dark, think I may get some better maps and try to hunt closer to town. But i will probably wait until elk season is over and the whitetails get closer to being in the rut, later in November.
Hope this helps. Let me know what if you get any deer. Good luck.

Badger Hunter,

Thanks for the information!

No, I have never been to Grangeville. In fact I have never been north of Boise in the western part of Idaho. This will be completly new for me.

Sounds like I need to find out if the land close to Grangeville is private. From looking at map I was going to go to the same area up Hwy 14.

I will be in the area the week of November 13th.

Do you have a permit for whitetail? If you do and you fill your tag let me know.

Good luck to you and thanks for the information!

Serious Hunter,

Thanks for the advise!

I have a 10 hour drive to get up to that area. I was hoping to get up there early in the season to check it out and get a little familar with the area. Then return near the end of the season if I didn't get one. I had things come up at work have NOT been able to get up there. Now I'm feeling the presure to find area's that I can hunt. Things are still crazy at work and it looks like I will only have 2 days near the end of the season to hunt.

Again thanks for your input and thoughts. If I get one I will post the pictures.

Good luck to you this hunting season!

Grangeville sits on the east end of a prairie. To the south is a timbered mountain - forgot the name. To the west - prairie then major canyonland, to the north - prairie, and then the canyon of the Clearwater and other stuff, and indian res. To the east - the canyon of the SF Clearwater ... and vast forests and mountains and canyons beyond. Deer probably everywhere. Pick your kind of hunting. Brush around = whitetail deer. An hour before dark they will start coming into the open, first does and fawns, small bucks, and finally, maybe, bigger bucks. By the time it turns dark - the amount of deer in an area that looked deerless will be amazing. So, yes, around Grangeville - private. More to the east - public, state, timber company?, etc. Private land - just ask.

If the weather gets nasty, REAL NASTY, you might try way east, in the deep forests, find a game trail, and sit. I am told that if you get on the right trail - and the deer (yes, whitetail) are starting to migrate - it will be amazing.

Tim,

Can you give me a idea of where the Salmon river breaks are? I'm not from this area nor have I ever been there.

Thanks!

It's the `major canyon land' to the west. If you `take a left' heading north to Grangeville, you'll be at the top of it. Tim can add more.

I have just always heard of people doing good in the salmon river breaks outside of cottonwood. I have never actually hunted there or remember if they where after mulie or whitetail. just that they always got decent bucks.
