Which way would you rather hunt Bear?

I have always hunted bear here in Colorado one on one on the ground. I use to sit up in the tree stand over bait when I was a kid with my father and it was a blast. I feel both are very much fair chase. And if we were still hunting them over bait and with dogs, here in Colorado, more people would be more apt to not take females or immature bears. A lot of peolpe out there have a hard time judging bears when you don't have something to compare them to. Either way I truly enjoy hunting bears! Good luck and good hunting!

Bears around here have become a real pain in the A** since they got rid of the spring bear hunt . I hunt over bait you get more coming in. I try to take a coupla females a year hopfuly with cubs. The bears realy have decimated our deer and Moose populations. takeing out the fawns and calves.
My buddy last year saw a doe giving birth he said it was the most amazing sight right up till it started taking it's first steps and a bear rushed out of the bush into the clearing and took off with the fawn .
I have seen the hind end of moose cows all scared up from where the bear eats the calf right out of the cow while it is giving birth.
Bring back the spring bear hunt. sorry to thosewho don't agree with my methods. I put bears right up there with wolf and cyotes. sad
F.K.

By "Fair Chase" do you mean no scent elimination, scope, binoculars, camo, lures, calls, blinds or stands?

By "Fair Chase" I mean No bait. Spot and Stalk. All of the things you have listed is used in Fair Chase Hunts.
I was just wonder how many hunters have hunted Bear using "Fair Chase". To me it is a more exciting way to hunt.

"Fair Chase" as I see it is using only a knife or a spear, one-on-one with the bear. I sit in the open with my rifle on the ground 20 feet or so from my bait and wait for a bear. If the bear wants to eat my bait, he has to do it knowing I am there. I have found this method to be very exciting and, I think fair. Sneaking around hiding and shooting an unsuspecting bear off in the distance does not sound fair to me, but to each his own.

The definition of fair chase is game that is not fenced in. If you want to pose a question I suggest you ask, over bait or spot and stalk. In my opinion this fair chase is just a buzz word.

The way people hunt black bear depends on the terrain you are hunting and the area. Spot and stalk is almost impossible in some areas, the woods are just way to think for such hunting, that is where baiting is needed.

I like to do both style of hunting, but I really like hunting from the ground using bait. Thumbs up

I would prefer not using bait. It is a real killer hauling bait through the thick cover we hunt not to mention the expense of procuring enough bait for bear season. In 40+ years in the woods, I have not seen one bear except at my bait stations.

I prefer hunting them with hounds. When I hunted in Idaho (havent hunted Montana) we did about 100 mile (at least it felt like it) on horseback "hunting hounds" for 3 days before they started coming back in and found the rest of them the next day down in a hole they couldnt get out of....no bear in site but boy did I get to see a lot of Idaho on that trip. One of the best and most memorable hunts I have ever been on. Thumbs up
You do it your way and call it whatever you want....have fun neener!

I don't agree with the premise of the thread: "fair chase" vs "bait." I know a whole lot of hunters who baited for black bear last year and got skunked. I ran two bait stations and between the two of them only had one bear hit them -- the one I got. And I worked a lot harder hauling all that material to build stands and establish a bait station a hundred miles north and muscling it into the woods than I have on a lot of non-bait hunts.

For blacks, I bait. For browns, I hunt a river full of spawning salmon. All bears want to do is eat, and that's the trick to hunting them no matter how you do it.
