I'm not going to repeat everything that has been said already but as you already know that when you start out in any sport or activity the cost can be greater than you were planning for.

But remember you aren't going to have to go out every season to buy a rifle and scope so although the initial lay out of cash may hurt the bank if your serious about hunting then the money has been well spent.

Happy hunting Nick.

Used

Find a used .243, .270 or 30-06 for $250-300 and spend the rest on a quality scope. The rifle accuracy is only as good as the scope. If you want new go with a savage(my preference). One little tidbit. A short action is easier to find scope mounts for than a long action.

Maybe I'm just a little "conservative", but I see nothing wrong with the 550.00 budget. That sould get you a good, accurate rifle and scope. All of the above suggestions are good. Hard to find a good used remington 788, but I have one in 30-30, and one in .243. Excellent guns! I also have a Savage 110 in 7mm mag. It was "cheap", but it will shoot with the best of 'em!

I have to agree here. I've seen some pretty nice rifles in various calabers in pawn shops for next to nothing.

I agree with the earlier post about the Weatherby Vanguard sold at Walmart. I bought a 7mm Rem Mag in this rifle 4 years ago. I love it. Have never had any issues with it. I did spring for the Leuipold scope at the time, but if its not in your budget, you can get a pretty nice scope for around $100 and then upgrade down the road. You dont have to spend tons of $$$ to hunt. Good Luck.

I own a winchester 94 30-30 , remington 7600 30.06 and a benelli 12 ga nova pump , can't go wrong with any of them . I bought all three off of gunbroker.com
if you know anyone with the guns everyoine is talking about , shoot them first and see what feels comfortable . Then get on gunbroker or go to your local pawn shops and see whats there for a good price. Be Patient!

Honestly , unless you have many open fields that you hunt , the 30-30 is perfect for just about any situation !

Savage 110. 30-06 She ain't sexy, but she sure does shoot nice and more accurate the more you shoot. Toss the simmons scope and get a Nikon Buckmaster, Awesome scope for an awesome price and almost impossible to knockoff zero.

Not a good brush gun though.
