Which rifle to use for an upcoming Montana elk/deer hunt??

Please pick two.

1. Model 70 Black Shadow 300 WM with VX-II 3-9x40. 180 gr Trophy bonded bear claw Federals

2. Tikka T3 Lite 30-06 with VX-I in 3-9X40. 165 gr Hornady Interbonds

3. Model 70 7mm Rem Mag with Vari-X III 2.5-8X36. 154 gr spire point Hornady.

4. Savage 99EG in 300 Savage with Vari-Xc 3-9X40. 150 gr Remington corelokts.

I can shoot them all very well to 200 yards, the 300 WM and 7mm, about a hundred farther. All rifles are in excellent condition. Do not handload. Thank you for reading.

for Elk choice number 1
for Deer choice number 2 but with 150 grain bullets instead of 165, i think 165 grain is little too much for deer

good luck and have fun Thumbs up

Probably 2 (elk) and 3 (deer) or just 1 or 2 if just one gun.

Note: Since all calibers are capable of taking elk or deer, these suggestions are made based on the type of bullet you mentioned, even though one caliber may have a slight advantage over another.

Ideally, #1 or #2 for elk (#3 isn't bad either). Speer's Trophy Bonded Bear Claw is one tough bullet and so is Hornady's InterBond. They will perform well on elk, but not create a lot of shock on deer unless you blow out a shoulder.

For deer, a lightly constructed bullet is needed so #4 is fine.

For one gun shooting the same bullet on elk and deer, #2 or #3.

#2. A 30-06 shooting Hornady Lite Magnum 165-gr. InterBonds would be an outstanding bullet for elk and deer.

#3 For a backup second rifle, 154-gr. Hornady Spire Point is similar to a 30 caliber 180-gr. load and in 7mm Mag. is a good combo.

I would have to say #1 and #3 both will work good for elk and I would rather have to much gun the not enough

I would use 3 or 1 because you'll need a good flat shooting rifles.

I would thing about add hold over dots put in some those scope, 400 or 500 yards shot are not uncommon, runs about $115.00 for dots up to a 1000 yards

Good luck on your hunt, post photos of the hunt
