It can be tough due to the amount of private land in unit 40, but it can be done. If you would like some info and help I will glady PM you and see if that is something you are wanting to do.

I think this next year will be a better year (weather permiting) , because there were not a lot of big bulls killed in the unit this year. The biggest I seen killed this year was a giant 380" 6x6.

Let me know.

My brother and I have 8 elk points and have been talking to an outfitter who hunts in the Black Ridge Wilderness area. I've not been able to find anything else on hunting that part of the unit. We would be looking at second rifle. Any input??
Like catfish, I'm torn between that and a high country bugle hunt.

Re: Which Colorado elk unit is best unit 66 or 40?

I didn't think there were many elk in the northern part of unit 40, so I'd be a little leery about hunting in that area. 8 points will get you into some good country, but are you a resident or nonresident?

I'm a nonresident. 40 seems to be the only "quality " area we could draw. I talked to some people in 49. Seems awfully high and rugged. I have some e-mails out to outfitters in 66, 67. I don't think I could swing a unit 40 private land hunt.

Does anybody have any knowledge of the northern part of 40?

The northern part of 40 is mostly wilderness and roadless areas. The Balck Ridge area is well known hiking area and does not hold elk. Now if you head further west to what us guys who have hunted 28 Hole in the good ol days, which has been closed since 1989 and use to be one of the best big buck areas in the state, does hold a few elk now. Though they are few and far between. Most of the time you never see elk in the northern part until late winter (if we get deep snows).

Thank you all for your input. I'm still undecided but the information has been helpful.

Hello:

I have 6 elk point and I considering GMU 40 2nd season, do have an option on this season?

2nd season in 40 is iffy. I wouldn't do it. 2008, 2007 and 2005 had 0% success. I have to assume that most of the elk get moved off the National Forest lands after 1st season.

Kelvin,

Are you a resident or nonresident ?

Ex,

I think the DOW is a little off on that one. Just my 2 cents.......

Could be, it's a problem that all units with small samples have. When you've only got a handful of hunters (for bulls), it's easy to miss the successful one in the surveys. And I'm not sure if the DOW compensates by increasing the % of hunters sampled in areas like 40.
