Which Colorado elk unit is best unit 66 or 40?

Pretty specific, but I am getting the impression that with 11 pref. points and a muzzle loader these two units are the best choices. Maybe somebody can set me straight or confirm my hunches......and if you know of a good good guide, I need one....thanks. I appreciate all the help I can get...

i think 61 takes 11 points to start drawing which is a better gmu than both 66 and 40.

Thanks, I agree with you 100% that it is a better unit from what I see. Problem is the pref points needed in 2009 muzzle loader was 17 so I don't think I will ever catch up to that one.

66 is within striking distance and websites say its good but I don't know. Unit 40 is hard to get any good info on....

If you are thinking about unit 40, you had better decide in the next two years, due to the fact they are bringing back the Ranching For Wildlife program. When they did this last time they went from taking 360-380 bulls to taking 290-320 bulls. Don't get me wrong there are still some giant bulls up there, it just does not help when they are taking all the better bulls with a rifle during the rut. As far as guide and outfitter there elk are gold to them and it can be very expensive.

Thanks elkkill06, sounds like you know unit 40.

In your opinion, would this unit be a good choice to go after this next fall.....I have enough pref points to draw the tag. I think your right on it costing more there though...

They are two different hunts, 40 has a high concentration of elk many are very big if max score is your goal this could be your unit. BUT there is a lot of private land and it takes a lot of research and help from people who realy know the area to do well but it can be done elkkill can confirm this.Pinion ,cedar ,sage some aspen forest and barbwire ,7000 to 9000 ft elevation .The elk scream there heads off ,pretty cool. 66 is 90% public land and a good part is wilderness the elk are more scattered and for the most part not as big but plenty to be proud of and it wont be too hard to spend a week in the woods and not see but 1 or 2 other hunters 9000 to 12000 ft elevation and you can afford a guide. There are some 350+ bulls there but myself I wouldn't pass a 320 in that unit to find one.the elk are pretty quiet there.I'm 2 for 3 years there 1st rifle and I scout in september and always see a few nice bulls .

I'll tell you what, you guys have been a big help. Things are getting clearer in my decision making now. I have been watching unit 76 for several years now and I was going to wait for it but now it keeps going up one pref point each year and it is always one more than I have! I can't catch up to it. Nothing like talking to people who have "been there, done that".
Thanks!

catfish, things will be different this year in muzzy drawing process because of the restructure. with that many points i would hold out for one of those prestigous gmu,s 1,2,10,201,61,76. its one of those once in a lifetime that you dont want to blow.

I think you guys pretty well have this covered, but I just wanted to point out one other thing regarding 66, and why it would be a bad idea to use your points there. It is not a quality managed unit, it is crowd controlled. You might also compare the number of points needed during the rifle seasons. I don't think any season requires more than 2 points, except muzzleloader. Units 40, 61, 76 of the upper echelon units require a lot more than that. And units 2,10, 201 in the top echelon require nearly double those units. Something to keep in mind.
Also, since this should be a trophy hunt if you're dropping 10+ points (although I know of a guy who used 20 points to shoot a raghorn in 201 and was tickled pink with it) you might want to take a look at the % of bulls being harvested. In those top echelon units, 5-10% of the available bulls are killed per year. In those upper echelon units like 61 and 40, they are taking a little under 20%. In units 66 and 67, it's more like 40%. 40% is just as bad as the White River herd. Heck, there a OTC units where 20% of the bulls are harvested.

Just my extra little input, but the point is 66 is nowhere near to being on par with 40 in terms of trophy potential.

catfish

It can be tough due to the amount of private land in unit 40, but it can be done. If you would like some info and help I will glady PM you and see if that is something you are wanting to do.

I think this next year will be a better year (weather permiting) , because there were not a lot of big bulls killed in the unit this year. The biggest I seen killed this year was a giant 380" 6x6.

Let me know.
