Which are the better units in Colorado for mule deer.

I have an active posting going in the elk forum asking about elk hunting areas, and as with elk, I also have 15 points built up for mule deer.(non-resident). So, I thought it may be appropriate to ask a question about the better units in Colorado for mule deer hunting.

I have not hunted mule deer in Colorado, just whitetails here at home.

In this case I am looking to have a nice hunt and also hopefully get into the neighborhood of one or more big muleys. I would prefer a rifle hunt or I could do a muzzleloader if necessary. I prefer unguided hunting.

So my question is, what units should I be looking at for more information, etc. on a mule deer hunt for big muleys? Also, what about those early season hunts ?

Thanks.

Units like 21 and 30 are pretty good, but I don't like them because you still have so many elk hunters out when you may have spent 10 plus years waiting for your deer tag. That's why units like 2,10 and 61 would get the nod from me. 66 and 67 are very good too, but not quite in the sam class as 2,10,201 or 61. I do not like unit`1.

I like unit 2 but I've seen some giant bucks while in unit 61 and I know it better. I'd have a rough time making that decision.

Unit 61 is better during the archery and muzzy seasons lately if you are looking for a giant. 3rd and 4th season have been pretty tough when it comes to those big muleys over the past few years.

I think 21 would be better for the amount of deer you will see in the rifle seasons and the opportunity for a big muley. Yes

Good luck on your quest and good hunting.

I have hunted unit 10 5 times over the last 15 years (some were doe hunts with the kids) always a lot of bucks ,nice bucks but I never saw a true monster there. It is a plesant hunt as you can be slective and the country is not real demanding but you need to bring good optics as this is how you will spend 3 to 4 hours a day ,I prefer 20x binos on a tripod to a spoting scope to scan a lot of country but from what I have read on this forum the bucks are better in 21. good luck have fun

You are in the same boat as I am..you can private message me if you like. I too have 15 and am planning on going muzzleloader, this year possibly..maybe we should pool our ideas..the guy exbioligist has a website called westernhuntingdata.com that can help with data collected to prompt your decision..good luck    JCi
