But if you did it the other way, then someone who has not earned to hunt the unit will get to without putting in the years Evil! Which would really rip-off folks with enough points that did not draw due to someone else getting their tag, with possibly much less points or now points. Huh?

Hi Springsman, was wondering which unit and season you decided to apply for. Didn't know if you saw that there was a new early season in unit 76.

Well…..I took it right down to the wire in trying to decide which unit to apply for….and I think it is good that I did.

I did not know about the new season they have this year in Unit 76 – until I read about it in a forum a few days prior to the application deadline.(I guess I should have checked the hunt codes earlier to see if they had any changes….) So, I did some quick research and decided that the early season rifle hunt in Unit 76 was most likely the best I would find anywhere.

The early season runs October 1-7 and the DOW says that they intend to issue about 50 tags – bulls only. They are reducing the tags from the other rifle seasons to get these 50 – so the total number of rifle hunter is supposed to be the same as last year.

The muzzleloader season would be a tad better for bull activity, but the 7mm can reach out a bit farther if needed. The first rifle season in Unit 61 was getting very tempting, but that season opens Oct 16th this year, so the early opening in Unit 76 made up my mind.

I could be beat out by others with more points, but we will soon find out.

Thanks to those who responded with information and ideas – I really do appreciate the time you took to send along your advice.

The wildlife commission has released the tag quotas for 2010.
The early rifle season in Unit 76 will offer 20 bull tags.

Thanks Alamosa. They had originally proposed a tag quota of 50 for this first early season hunt, but maybe they re-thought it and reduced the number to see how this first time goes.

Only 20 hunters in that big of an area should certainly provide for an exceptional hunting experience for those who draw the tags. A few more weeks and we should know who those people are.

Thanks again for the information.
