Where to hunt in western Oregon??

I have been hunting every weekend and some week days, since the start of the rifle season. I am yet to see any deer, I have seen 1 small bear up 3 lynx off 224.
Plus, no one I know has bagged a deer this year. I shot a 3-point in scappoose 2 years ago, but have not had any luck since.
I would like to hunt the santiam unit, but its kinda a long drive from portland when you dont know where exactly to go. I dont want to waste time scouting during the season. Any suggestions that might help a brother out??

Where to hunt in western Oregon??

hey
ill try helping you out i am from st helens about 7 miles noth of scappoose. some areas i have had success are alder creek area & gunners lake area. I have got a 4x3 a couple years ago and couple forkies. last year i got a 3 pt nice one to. holds some heaving antlered bucks up there. i usually hunt there but i recently joined the military and cant hunt this year no leave. i havent been up there in about a year so dont know if it is any good but my dad has told me its all right not as good as usual due to some poaching probably.gunners lake is good hunting pretty thick though you gotta get out and walk. alder creek is great just get into the canyon down deep away from people it is heavily road hunted and all the deer are pushed off the roads which has worked to my advantage in past if you get out of the truck. i would ask my dad but he and my brother and uncle have been hunting saddle mtn and santiam units. to get to alder crrek you can follow scappoose vernonia hwy up and hang a right on cater hill and alder creek is like a 1/4 mile on the left. u have to drive by some houses on pavement then it hits gravel. gunners lake is about 20 minutes up vernonia hwy on the left. good luck hope i help some.

oh another area in scappoose area is dutch canyon it used to be good about 6 years ago. i quit hunting there cuz of too much damn poaching. although the state police started patrolling it pretty well so it may have picked up. check there if no luck in other areas i told you. i dont remember what road its off of so just look on a map or ask someone out in scappoose where it is they should be able to tell you. its directly behind scappoose though. and if your willing to travel saddle mtn is great lots of thinned out timber just walk any skidder trail through that thinned stuff and you should see some deer they are everywhere. if all you see is does just keep going back cuz when the pre rut starts the buck will be right there. my uncle got a heavy 3x2 on sunday up there it was with 2 other bucks to just couldnt explain to me exactly where.
hope i helped
good luck

Thank you crbaker333

I hunted rabinski road which is pretty packed with road hunters, then went up dutch canyon over otto miller to smoke ranch, which also was teeming with local hunters. They just did some major logging in there, saw lots of sign, but no animals. Gunners is a good idea, but also hunted pretty heavily. I was thinking of maybe hitting up the jewell area, to see if getting further into the BLM land up there. Although im not familiar with the logging roads, there is alot of open land out there. Which can be found on the oregon fish and game website under scappoose game unit maps.

I'll keep tryin...! My friend got a shot off @ a black bear up the clackamas river hwy by 3 lynx.
Which has been the highlight so far, I will update you on any successful ventures.

nicolai mainline

I have been looking for the nicolai mtn mainline on the saddle mtn unit maps, and cannot locate it. It has nicolai mtn on the map, but doesn't show any road going up there. You wouldn't be able to tell me how to get there would you?
I will be coming from 26 and up OR-103 to Jewell.

Thanks
