You picked a hard place to hunt! I never did like hunting that stuff over there. There's lots of places to hunt though. I'm mostly familuar with the area behind Falls City called Black Rock and Valsetz. Goint up to either is mostly timber company land that always used to be open. Going from Falls City to Black Rock you eventually come out rear Grand Rhonde, toward Valsetz it come's out at Sletz. Of course there are a ton of roads there and they have changed over the years. Come to think of it, I hunted the Polk-Talbot holdings when I was young too. Don't recall how to get there but somewhere west of Dallas out Ellendale Rd.

Were I to go, I think I'd go toward Valsetz. I lived up there about 35yrs ago.

When you get to Falls City you'll find a bridge that crosses the river. Straight ahead is Black Rock; Left and cross the river, go straight to Valsetz.

I have hunted Valsetz a lot for elk and have seen many quality bucks up there. It can be kind of tough hunting at times with the brush and steep terrain, but its worth it. BIG ELK in there if you can find them. I know the old mill site is open to archery, but not sure about rifle. Since the new owners of the timber land up there took over, they have been much more pro hunter...

Please see my post about timber companies closing access to the mountains. I heard the areas around Black Rock and Valsetz may be entry-by-fee-only this coming season. I love this area and hope my info is wrong, but unfortunately it sounds more true every day. Good hunting to you!
