When Women Hunt (feature article)

June 2010 Feature Article:

When Women Hunt

Sophisticates call them the fairer sex. In so many ways this is truer than most of us guys care to admit. Pride aside, I must concede. Historically dominated by men, hunting is an activity now seeing more women entering the ranks than ever before. Few men will say it, but I've witnessed it firsthand. Many women are more patient, less excitable, and yes, sometimes they even shoot better! Read more...

Re: When Women Hunt (feature article)

I'm sure there are a number of things that women are better at in general than men. But looking at the big picture, to me it all comes down to the individual. I have no problem with women who hunt, shoot, or fish. The more people you get involved in this sport the better. There was a point here some time ago where neither young men nor any women were much involved in hunting or shooting. I worry that the tradition will not be passes to the next generation, but maybe it will, it will just be mothers teaching their sons and daughters to hunt and shoot.

I don't meant to go off on a rant here, but I'm going to, because I think it's relevent. I'll tell you one thing that's become extreamly worrysome to me - guys today who don't even know how to change a flat tire much less gut an animal or clean a firearm. I think something went extreamly wrong with western society when guys became more occupied with clothes, manicures, appearances, and gossip rather than getting their hands dirty doing something for their own betterment. I know a lot of guys my own age who can't or won't even do the simple task of changing thier own oil in a vehicle, because it's too dirty or it's a task that's beneith their dignity. I know many more guys who don't even know how to hold a hammer properly much less drive a nail without injuring themselves. It's troublesome to me when other guys my own age and younger question or wonder why I have so many well used tools in my garage and shed. It's as if the concept of actually fixing or building something with your own two hands has become completely lost with the younger generations. If modern men have doomed themselves to stoop to these levels, then I have no problem when a woman wants to take the reigns and make the world go. Someone has to keep these skills and this knowledge alive.

You said it all western, I

You said it all western, I make sure to teach my kids about the outdoors and take them with me when ever its possible. I even have started teaching my oldest how to change oil in cars and every month we pick a building project and do it, like bird house, new rail for our deck, and whatever else needs done. This was also the first year my wife wanted to go hunting with me and actually hunt, she did great. her dad never did anything like that with her when she was growing up, and now she is hooked and cant wait till next year.

I agree

I agree with all the things you said.  We do most of the repairs to our vehicles ourselves.  Yes, I am female but I can do as much or more than most guys.  Scruffy appreciates my help.  I was not taught a lot of things when I was younger, but have learned a lot by reading and asking for advice and by being willing to be shown how to do stuff that I don't know how to do.  Scruffy calls me a sponge because I just soak up the info that I get.  The rancher that lets us hunt on his land says I'm "more of of a man than most men"  and an ex-boyfriend once told me that I 'had more balls than most men".  I consider these statements compliments.  The problem is that people have gotten lazy and they think that paying for something to be done is better than doing it themselves.  With the economy the way it is today, the smart thing is to be self reliant, because you never know when the government will destroy the world as we know it.  Hunting for food, fixing things, upkeep on possessions and spending money only on neccessities will be the things that help us survive.

self reliance

Self reliance is the best thing anyone can have going for them.  Knowing how to be proficient in repairs, building, and hunting/farming is something that needs to be passed down.  Sadly it's becoming a lost art, frowned upon and looked down upon by most cosmopolitan folks.  In my mind, knowing how to do something like this just adds to your own independence.

I definitely made sure I knew

I definitely made sure I knew how to shoot, how to fish, and how to fix my car. I don't want to have to depend on anybody if the world comes to an end and the zombies come =-)

What do you mean?......The zombies are already here. They're the people under 30 years old who never look up because they're too busy facebooking on their smart phone and don't have an attention span long enough to read much more than a simple text message. Big smile

But I guess I'm behind because I've been told that was so 2.2 seconds ago. Whistling
