What bullet do you shoot?  Do

What bullet do you shoot?  Do you shoot factory or handloads?  The reason I ask is that I currently shoot 130 grain, but I am thinking of going to 150 grain and seeing how it shoots in my rifle.

Dunns- I would say that your .270 with 150 grain bullets did the trick on that monster. Good work and congratulations on such a great buck. What did he score?

My rifle run down:

Remington 700 Varmint Heavy barrel/varmint stock in .223

Remington 700 Stainless Synthetic in .270 Winchester

Howa 1500 Olive Drab Hogue stock/blued in .338 Winchester

Ruger 10/22 grey laminate stock, blued barrel, barrel shroud, flash suppresser, stacked magazines, see through scope rings in .22 LR haha

I have pretty much but the biggest game covered. I plan on owning a .375 at some point in my lifetime so I will fill that niche.

I have yet to hunt with my

I have yet to hunt with my .375 H&H, but I hear they make a nice elk gun.  I just have to get a scope for it.  I currently shoot it with its iron sights and I was surprised to find it is a delight to shoot.  I can shoot an entire box of shells with no shoulder pain or discomfort.  It doesn't really "kick" but is more like a firm push.  The one I have has a two-stage trigger.

This is really nice because you push it forward adn then it just takes ounces to pull the trigger.  YOu better be on target because as soon as you touch it it is going off.  It is a CZ USA American Safari model.

I think if you get one you'll really enjoy shooting it.  Plus it is nice to shoot a gun with a bullet that is huge.

I just think that the

I just think that the cartridge is about as bad @$$ looking as you can get! It is as long as a cigar and has that very slight taper. The shoulder is really small and I just think it looks awesome. I love going into sporting goods stores and pulling a couple of those shells out of the box and checking them out. I can not wait till I get one. Darn it CVC, you are making my want to go spend a bunch of money that I do not have. You are a bad influence.

Remington model 725

Hello BGH,

With all the rifles posted, I want to pick your brain with this model.  I have a chance to buy a Rem model 725 (late '59-early '60) for $400.  It is in good condition all around, and feels really good too.  I have researched this gun, but found very little.  The ser #(707251, no letters) indicates the gun may have been rebarreled, but maybe not.  The bottom line is, even if you are or are not a Rem person, does anyone know if this is a good buy?

Oh, I shoot a Win 94 30-30, H&R .22, TC 300, 12 GA, 410 and two hand guns.

I don't think much was wrong

I don't think much was wrong with it but to me, unless you really like the rifle, you can get a brand new rifle for about the same money.

You didn't say what caliber the 725 is, but if mint, that's not a bad price for someone wanting a classic, older rifle. The 725 was the predeccessor of the M700 which debuted in 1962, I believe. A lot has changed in making rifles since the '50s, some good, some bad. As already mentioned, there are some decent new rifles available for $400. today like the Ruger American and Marlin X7 series.

It depends on if you're a fan of walnut/blued or maybe like a synthetic stocked rifle. I own a good number of rifles made from 20 to 60 years ago. If an older rifle was taken care of it can still provide many more years (decades?) of fine service. I do think it would be fair to say, however, that very fine accuracy (as in MOA or sub MOA) might not be there in a 40-50-60 year old rifle, although some of my older rifles are still extrememly accurate.

Good Luck!  Grin

Rem 725 update

Hi BGHs,
After much research and holding the Rem 725 many times, I have decided to walk away. The Rem 725 is a 30-06, and appears to have been rebareled in the late 90's to early 2000. It is a "nice" piece of history, an ok back up rifel, but as mentioned, I can find a new desent rifle for the same money. Interesting info I found out about the Remington rifle though. Thanks everyone for the info.
