What's you favorite part about Trapping?

I was telling Serious Hunter (from Idaho) about those cats you have there! We have a few around here but were not allowed to keep them. Only if you draw a tag (for 1) in Pa. Theres a lot of them in Pa.
Season closes here in NJ today. I'm on my way to the fur buyer in the morning. Thumbs up

I love reaching down in that freezing water and feeling for the spring of a 330 to see if its been set off and man does the heart start to pound when it has. Then the work begins, chopping the stakes out of the ice and pulling that beaver up out of the water. That's fun.

I'm going to be as kind as I can be here. Reahing into the water to check a 330 is about the most dangerous thing you can do. You better have someone with you to cut you out or you will die. .! How in the hell would you get free with a 330 wrapped around you wrist, below the ice in freezing water.
But you are right when you say exciteing, it is not to be confused with "wise"

Please don't do that again.

Hammer1,
This is how I check the 330, I chop a hole by the stake and run my hand down the stake to the spring, not the trigger! I check the spring to see if it's been set off. I never place my hand by the trigger and to do so would be foolish.

hunter777,
I have enough trapping stories already. I'm glad I don't have one of being caught in a 330 in -10 weather. I did have a big double spring go off on me once and it took me 10 minutes of wading through a swamp before I found some ground solid enough for me to step on to release the springs. I now know what our game feels....nothing because my hand went numb and I lost all feeling in it. Oops!

My friend, who been trapping for decades made a gizzmo that he wears over his shoulder and connects to the trap when he bends over. By then standing erect, the springs are released(or something like that).
He's a forum member( the nail) and I'll have him post some info for you.

release your self

Hiker , this is the nail I heard you got tangled up with a 330 .I made a divice out of a peice of roap. I used a 1/2 inch nylon roap The length depends on your size .I braded a loop in it big enough to go around your shoulder and under your arm fairly close to your elbow .I put a good sized S hook on it . You feed the roap through the top ring of the spring of the trap and hook the bottom ring and stand up until the spring compresses and with the free hand you put the lock on .I proof tested this a few times and it works great .If this dont make any sence to you .I'll see if hammer 1 will take a pic with his new dig camera and E maill it to ya

BE A SAFE TRAPPER DON'T TAKE CHANCES .THIS WONT WORK UNDER THE ICE thenail

Hiker , the hammer and I go back a long way and we hunt and fish and do a bit of trapping together .Hope I could be of some help . I know the feeling of the 330 on the arm been there done that . I was lucky to have my son with me to help with the chore of getting that 330 of my arm .I was like the coyote . I only had to get stung once .That contraptcion really works well . You will have to make it to fit your self . You have to get very close to the trap to get it hooked into place and then raise your body to compress the springs . Put the lock on with your free hand . Something to play with while wating for the season..Happy trapping ,
