whats going on with this bear?????

Theories and ideas are endless when it comes to hunting, particularly when it comes to bears. Five gallons of bait per day is already a lot of bait. To the point where you should have numerous bears hitting that site. That bear probably isn't going too far away after each feeding so don't go changing your routine. Continue with the timer and camera to get a solid feel for his pattern and don't be too surprised if one day everything changes for no apparent reason. Be patient opening day. Remember, its called 'hunting' not 'Shooting'.

whats going on with this bear?????

it's well known and documented that bears eat 10 % of their body weight per day.. 5 gallon of bait will not fill this beast stomach .

i don't think bears care about competition as much as some hunters do,!! (espacially in the fall ) bears want to eat and eat and eat and then drink and then go back to eating again,, from mid july until the fall bears will turn onto an eating machine .

You will not screw up, u just need to make few changes until u find something that bears like to make them stick around longer , the only thing that make bears stick around in the fall is food , plenty of food that is ! and not any food will do the job especialy in the fall , so be careful with what u use .

u better act quickly or u r not gonna be able to tag the bear .
i wanna ask u why u only have 1 bear hiting the bait ? have u seen different tracks ? is theres more bears in the area u r hunting ? why u choose this area to hunt bears?

this is how i would do it if i were u :

bait once a week , or twice max . add bait not later then 1 oclock
plenty of food to last the next trip.
different kind of baits
spray anise oil, peppermint , liquid smoke to top of trees by using water gun.
honey burn.
if this didn't work then read the bottom of this post .

once all done leave and watch the timer, it shouldn't take long for this bear to change, 2 weeks i would say .
remember something here,, this is a un -established bait site, that means everything is new to the bears in the area , so it is gonna take a lot of time for bears to adjust to everythig new .. give it time and things will change but few changes from ur part need to be done first .

Oh and by the way .. welcome to fall bear hunt !!
not to discourage u but fall bear hunt has made many bear hunters get down on their knees and Brick Wall,) ..

My question to u is : if the 5 gallon bait not doing it's job why continue with it ? u r hunting bears, so if smething u are trying doesn't work try something else.
if u want the bear to come more often then it's time to change ur plan PERIOD !!

I myself have dealt with quite a few nocturnal bears in the past and have found a way to break them down and force them to come during the day,,if u want to know how let me know , it's very interesting and fun but it does require 3 days of ur time,, if u r willing to go for it let me know !

Yep, bears do eat a large portion of their body weight per day. But not every day and only at certain times of the season. If it were otherwise, you'd be up to your knees in bear poop every time you visited your baitsite. And that just isn't the case. I put out 8 - 10 pounds of bait once a week starting 6 weeks before the hunt begins. Two weeks before the hunt starts, I bait twice a week. The week prior to the hunters arrival, I bait every second day with 5 pounds. This is more than enough to keep a bear hanging around and often the guys have multiple bears coming in. This gent is feeding 5 gallons every day and it is more than enough to keep a bear interested. I know I don't have your experience with bears, but my success rate hasn't changed in years. Its always 100 percent but that includes guys who pass on small adults or those who miss or those who wound and dont recover their animal.

whats going on with this bear?????

I increased the bait, but the bear has not been back for three days now. I do see a lot of bear poop around. It is hard to tell if there are other bear tracks around, but I have to assume that there are. I really don't think they have been to my bait otherwise my camara would prove it. I choose this site because the landowner had told me that he had seen a bear around. Also because it is a large chunk of land with no other compition. I know a few tricks to get the bear to hit in the daylight, but now he is not hitting at all. Do you guys think that the bear has moved on or will he be back? I also walked in the blueberrie fields today around my bait, still a lot of berries. I also saw a lot of bear poop souranding the fields. there is two berrie fields around my site both withen 200 yards either side. what are your feelings on this bear coming back?????

whats going on with this bear?????

Hi DJ

is he back ?

so u chose this location because the land owner told u he have seen a bear there ? did u ( before u setup the crib) try to find if there is more signs or tracks in the area ?

what's happening here is that u r surrounded by 2 berry field, and when one of the field is eaten by the bear , the bear move to the other field and eat the new grown berry and back and forth between the 2 field, now if no more berry to feed on, the bear stop and feed on ur goodies waiting for mother nature to provide him with more fresh berry.
is theres other food source in the area beside the 2 berry field ? is there is water located nearby or not ? many things can explain why this bear is behaving this way but we gotta know the surrounding very well in order to find the answers and act accordingly

go do little scouting in the area and try to learn more about it and get back to me ...

u have few options right now.

1. after ur scouting trip and finding a better location u can ( and should ) move ur crib to it on the last week before the season open and start baiting there, this will help alot in getting this bear and maybe other bears to come to investigate .
but before u pick a location for the new site, u need to find a good location with lots of tracks and signs and then hang ur stand and wait for the right time .
keep adding bait to the old baitsite as well .

2. this is funny to u but it does help, NO COMPETITION is allowed near any of ur baitsite !

3. u can start advertising the baitsite again by doing the following :
a. drag a dead beaver or any animal behind u around the baitsite in all 4 direction .
b. spray anise oil and liquid smoke everytime u add fresh bait.
c. do honey burn everytime u add fresh bait.
d. step in grease and walk around ur site in all 4 direction.
e. spray blood and other stinky scent or the above scent from the 2 berry field straight to ur site

when does the season open for u in ur area? and how long it last?

If its a sow, definitely she'll be back. Their home range is much smaller than that of a boar so you're already in her back yard. A boar is much harder to predict as its range can be easily 5 times that of a female but during the breeding time may show up regularly if theres a sow around. Now though, the breeding seson is long gone and a boars main goal is to put on fat for the winter. As for the bears inconsistency in hitting your bait site, it may be feeding a lot on berries or whatever its taken a liking to at this time. Over the years I've baited I've found that once a bait is hit and nothing unusual happens, that bait will seldom be abandoned for long. Three weeks ago, I had a bait hitting regularly, then it missed for at least a full week. Its now back being hit almost daily. I've said it before and its true with many game animals. They're hard to predict and just when you think you've got it all figured out, they go and change the rules.

The only thing predictable about black bears is that they are unpredictable.
