whats going on with this bear?????

I have had my bait out for two weeks now, and this bear is throwing me for a loop. This looks like a nice boar around 250-300 lbs he usually spends about a hour at the bait, and eats every little crum that is there. He will it Hit for three days and than miss three days. He is exactly on this schedule every time. The first day that he comes back he usually hits around 5:00 am the other two days he is there around 9:30 pm. It is 20 days till opening day what do I do to get this bear comeing every day and at a time that I could shoot. I am in a very quiet privatly owend property with no pressure around what so ever. I'm very curious to hear if anybody else has had this problom. Help me please!!!!

whats going on with this bear?????

I'm surronded by blue berry fields. all blue berries have pretty much gone by. I am inbetween two mountians in a low dark area. It is very quiet with minnimal to no people activity besides my own. about 1 mile from any tar road, the only way to acess the propety that i'm on is to drive dricetly by the farm house that I have permisson to hunt from the owner. I'm also clos to a swap which is in the same direction that the bear is coming from. If you need more information let me know.

Am I to assume that you have a multiple event timer or camera at your bait so that you have his routine down to a science? How much bait are you putting out at one time? No animal will feed exclusively on one food source indefinitely when theres alternatives readily available. Most berry crops last a few weeks, and in the case of blueberries they can last months because of the variety of species but a bear will not feed solely on them day in and day out. Lots of things will move an animal from place to place in a routine fashion.--garbage day for example. Your bait choice may well be the best way to solve the problem. Try varying your bait using meat scraps and sweets at the same time. That might elliminate his desire to go else where for change. Too bad this swamp isn't closer because he may well be heading there for resting periods particularly if you're going through a hot spell. If possible I'd have set up shop near there and have the best of both worlds.

I would continue baiting on the same schedule, but I would try to remove the bait an hour before dark from now until the season starts. That should get him to come in earlier.

How much bait do you put out at a time??? Perhaps try less bait to make him think there is another critter "stealing his food". Trying to create the competition thing might get him to commit earlier. Also, depending on far you want to go with this...you might try finding/picking up some other bear scat (using gloves of course)and placing it at the bait site. This would definitely make him think there another bear taking his food. If he's that big he might not tolerate that intrusion. GOOD LUCK!!!!

I put out around 5 gallons per night, And he eats every last crum. I do have a carama out and it does not seem to bother him. I have even tryed taking it out and it has not changed hir routine. I'm using sweets for bait, coverd with a lot of used frilater grease. I also have a lot of anise around for scent. the bait site really smells awsome. I just can't understand why when he is there he recks the place but than dissapers for three days. I'm 100% postive there is nobody baiting remotely close to me. Do you think that he will keep this routine going? I really do not want to miss the opertunity to bag this nice bear, it will be my first!!

Keep doing what your doing...the 5 gallons of bait isn't going to hurt but it takes a lot of food to feed and satisfy a bear that size. This is probably why he's leaving and going elsewhere. He will go his circle which brings him back to your bait on that 3rd day. Maybe the closer the season gets you might want to try and increase the amout of food you put out and that way he may be more inclined to stay by a guaranted food source rather than go wondering. Where are you from?? Are there a lot of berries around you?? Once these dry up if there are any he may be staying at your bait more provided there is enough food there to keep him there.

I am from Maine and there is a few berry fields close by. I thought about when I go in tomorrow that I will increase the bait. He has not hit for three days, so tomorrow he should be there. I use a 5 gallon bucket with the lid on it, and when i say that he eats every crum I mean he licks the bucket untill it is shinney white. So I totally agree with more bait. Opening day is the 28th so hopefully some changes will help..
